“Pennsylvania Grey” is a culmination of 4 years of close musical and personal friendship between three musicians from three different parts of the globe. The trio consists of Michael Cabe on piano from Seattle, Washington, Mark Lau on bass from Sydney, Australia and Ernesto Cervini on drums from Toronto, Canada. This debut album is made up of original compositions from all three musicians as well as one traditional hymn. The group’s sound evolves from the trio sounds of the great Oscar Peterson, Peter Erskine and EST.
These three musicians have already had successful careers in their own right, performing at jazz festivals such as the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy, the Pori Jazz Festival in Finland and others in Canada, the United States, Australia, and Hong Kong. They have also performed in many of the great jazz venues in the world as well as many of the best in New York city, such as Birdland, Dizzy’s Club, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The 55 Bar and Sweet Rhythm.

dark and beautiful
author: Dan McCarthy
It was sometime around 11pm on a Monday night when I first started listening to Pennsylvania Grey by the New York trio MEM3. Having heard all of these musicians separately but never as a trio, I didn’t know what to expect. It was clear from the first few bars that this was going to be a record that I would enjoy.
It is an aptly titled record, as the mood is immediately defined with a somewhat dark yet hopeful tone, both in the mood of the music, and the quality of the recording. I must say that I have heard many young groups coming out of New York with their “new sound”, which, to be honest, sounds like everyone else. But MEM3 seems to have broken free of that toehold and come up with something that does stand out. Bad craziness no more, I say!
Beautiful melodies, haunting harmonies, and a truly unpretentious sound weave this music into a tapestry of sound, grabbing the listener and actually holding them throughout. The three musicians themselves mesh together seamlessly and makes you wish that more people would form “bands” instead of throwing together whoever is free. Highly recommended for anyone who likes good music, and not recommended for those who don’t. Pick it up today folks, don’t delay. Operators are standing by 24 hours a day. Inspirational, thought-evoking, and positive music. Buy it.
