THE SEATTLE TIMES (9/04)
Debut CD of the month: "As Small as the Center," a stunning production from a fast-rising Seattle band called Mercir. Songs like "The War Room" and "Since the End" owe a huge debt to Radiohead - but a band could reach for much lower standards, and this isn't ripoff material.
A man called Zadok is the singer, guitar player and lyricist. From the first words of the first song, you know he can write... Joel Eby plays piano and keyboards and Colin Johnson adds layers of samples and electronics. Whatever they were eating and drinking when they made this beautiful record, I hope they pass it around to other local bands.

Moving lyrics set to ambient, gorgeous music .
author: DaphneI originally found this album while searching for bands similar to The Postal Service and was pleasantly surprised to discover this amazing band. Honestly, when I first heard the album I adored half of the songs, and now after listening a few more times, I adore the other half. The lyrics are incredibly interesting and moving. The tone of the lead singer's voice is different, not the standard sweet and smooth; but having a more distinct and choppy sound. I particularly love in several of the songs that after the bulk of the singing is finished, the electronic induced interludes come in and blow me away. I would strongly recommend this album to just chill to, drive to, study to, or sing along to. I hope they come out with more very quickly.
