genius, no really
author: Marit Peters
I'm not one of those laid back types that has music on in the background while talking to someone or working on something else. I LISTEN. Bad music can be debilitating to me. Will's music also stops me in my tracks but for all the right reasons. His lyrics are smart, hooky, sardonic, and concise in much the same way as Pablo Neruda’s poetry. One doesn’t have to know every verse of The Wasteland to appreciate the references (no offense McKinley, I love your brainiac music too!). Will’s voice enters through the pours and stays vibrating inside one’s whole body, especially live, but in some of his recordings also. His arrangements are as precise as the lyrics. Someone told me once, many years before David Gray became hugely popular, that he (David Gray) was too good to become popular; that the purchasing masses don’t care enough about good music to really listen. I hope he learns from Gray’s success, and gets back into the studio.
So to those of you who care enough to really listen, you’re in for great pleasure with this music. Will Johnson will take you into his world, you’ll be sad, aflame, amused, nostalgic, hopeful, and exasperated. You’ll be swept along the deep river that is his music. I miss it like a limb.
