Merkley's primary influences are the blues men of the early 1900's. His songwriting blends numerous variations of the blues as they were interpreted over the course a century. A variety of themes find their way into his creations resulting in a unique blend of American roots music.
It's not quite blues, not quite folk and even borders on rock and roll.
In 2002, Merkley and a group of friends called The Crooners built an American roots band out of resonator guitars, harmonicas, and a washtub bass. They packed and unpacked their way through a dozen countries in Europe, over the course of four Summer tours. It was there, playing for the people in the streets, that Merkley discovered the fundamentals of what music can bring to life.
In between summer tours, Merkley returned to the states with a renewed perspective of music and created "One Foot", a live recording of one of his first solo performances. It was April of 2004, the bar was packed with friends and fans, and the energy level was high.
One mic for the harp and vocals, two mics for guitars, one mic for the left foot, one mic at the bar...
