Meryl Leppard is all style - not just glamour, not jsut presence, not just hints of vaudeville, but the real McCoy. No-one else this critic can think of can mix show-tune melody and Bossa Nova and still maintain cred (nay, adoration within what passes for Sydney's Underground. Leppard's done well amongst fans of wordier music, especially in Sydney's "spoken word" scene. That success attests not only to her skills as a songwriter, but to her crystaline vocals. Those who've encountered Leppard are unlikely to have forgotten the lady who writes 4/4 tunes about naive couple trying to waltz and carries them off without a hint of cynicism. This particularly classy self-produced EP is a three track insight into the Leppard experience. There's elements of Sunday afternoon jazz crooning and understated latin groove. The marriage of Leppard's pure vox and the clever steel-string sound of Bob Spencer hints at both Astrud Gilberto and Joni Mitchell, with a touch of 90's irony. Basically this is a big, seductive sound for a duo. The result is never hard of the ears, but it's nevertheless sophisticated and, most of all, engaging. Three tracks are nowhere near enough.
