Album Notes

Based on the classic comic by legendary illustrator Osamu Tezuka, Metropolis is being brought to the screen by two of the most respected figures in Japanese animation today (Katsuhiro Otomo and Rintaro). Metropolis is a futuristic story of the ageless class struggle, not amongst humans, but between humans and the humanoid, set in a futuristic city at the height of its civilization. Spectacularly rendered in its visual style, it combines the best in Japanese animation with the latest in digital technology. Domo Records is proud to present the original soundtrack composed by Toshiyuki Honda. The music blends the New Orleans, Dixie style jazz with classical music.

Absolutely wonderful soundtrack

An absolutely wonderful mixture of orchestral music, 1920's jazz and electronics, beautifully arranged and performed. A very melodic score, which stands quite well on it's own, without the film. My favourite tracks: Going to Zone, Three-Faced of Zone. This film (and soundtrack) are not related to the great Fritz Lang film of the 20's, but no less interesting.

A decent soundtrack

The original metropolis is an old silent film, which ment the plot had to be carried by a large classical score. The modern animated version doesn't require it, and so, the score is not so good. I would say, a modern score trying to match up to the silent film's 3 hours of full orchestra is not realistic. But this is about as close as you get these days. Unfortunately, the brash sounds don't translate well onto a soundtrack. A more adult work then animated films on any side of the ocean normally get, but, a little too frustrating to enjoy listening to away from the film.
