Mezzo's energetic indie pop offers listeners a compelling dose of intricate melodies, sprawling rhythms and raw emotion. Singer/guitarist Jeff Snyder combines witty lyricisms with tenderly screamed (or sung) emotional vocals. Behind him, bassist Chris Chandler handles the low end with harmonic genius and tight rhythms, while guitarist Yod Paul wields bright sonic texture and relentlessly distorted leads. To complete the experience, drummer Ritchie Abagon plays hard pop drums with yummy cheese fills and driving rhythms. While the quartet draws the influence of everyone from Sunny Day Real Estate and the Pixies to the Beatles and Pink Floyd, Mezzo's songwriting and sounds are clearly like no other. 2001's Mind Teeth and Everything is a fitting example of their unparalleled energy, alternating between rolling beauty and thick, raw, underground rock. -- Abigail Clouseau
