MEZZO ‘s music is indeed ageless -- from the unique Afro-Cape-Latin Slow Jam Age Is Just A Number to the classical African wedding songs – Ungo Wam and She’s So Cheeky.
This distinguished vocalist, who early in his life put a potentially glittering musical career on hold to pursue a career in journalism, has finally emerged from the shadows.
MEZZO’s first release – appropriately dubbed TIMELESS, is a titillating marriage of diverse African sounds with a sprinkle of old-school soul.
In true MeZZo fashion, he first honed his vocal and songwriting prowess under the watchful eye of the master architect of musical hybrids – RJ Benjamin. MeZZo has been auditioned and chosen by the multi-award-winning Benjamin for his Born To Sing Pro vocal course.
His music is a melodic, foot-stomping celebration of South Africa’s diversity with a sprinkle of soul gold dust. The versatility of this singer-songwriter shines through in Ungo Wam and She’s So Cheeky. He’s comfortable singing in isXhosa, isiZulku and Afrikaans.
MeZZo plies his trade at the public broadcaster, the SABC, in a creative capacity. He is a news bulletin writer for Afrikaans TV News, and he voices news packages.
His delightful vocals and harmonies speak to a multilingual audience and stretch beyond borders. In Ungo Wam and She’s So Cheeky the velvety harmonies of SABC colleague Hope Zulu adds sparkle and an authentically indigenous ring to the songs.
Whether you experience his music as soul, Afro Pop, South African fusion, Afro Vibes or Afro Rhythms, it will make your feet do the singing.
In She’s So Cheeky they honour three South African musical giants –- The Prince, Jabu Khanyile of Bayete fame, The Wild Dog, Coyote from Stimela and the Queen of Maskandi, Busi Mhlongo.
A strong Cape Jazz influence –- including a uniquely Cape Minstrel banjo sound -- resonates in Ungo Wam.
MeZZo and producer Mark are children of the Eastern Cape soil -- MeZZo from Breidbach, King William’s Town -- a village nestled in a valley between Bhisho and Zwelitsha, and Mark from Uitenhage – renowned for the famous pop group of the Sixties, The Invaders.
Mark, a distinguished keyboardist, rubbed shoulders with the best – amongst others Bongo Maffin, Thandiswa Mazwai, Danny K, KB, Stoan and Speedy.
MEZZO is unorthodox and bold ... yet intoxicatingly authentic.
