Album Notes

"This jazz/funk ensemble takes the stage to create something that's bigger than they are, maybe even cosmic."
- Style Weekly

"What they brew is slim and trim, fast and loose, light and heavy, bumpin' and cruisin'...everything slips, slides, squeezes, and slithers too quickly, too many lines flow on too many levels for too short a time for anything to get out of hand" - The Hook

"With musical powerhouses such as Agents of Good Roots sax player JC Kuhl teaming up with the group, a Modern Groove Syndicate gig brings the house down." - Richmond Times Dispatch

"When Modern Groove Syndicate gets rolling, people move along with it and find themselves dancing, drawn to their feet, bouncing and bopping to the strong beats. They fall from crescendos, which are almost orgasmic in effect, and the surge begins anew for another assualt on auditory sensibilities." -Richmond Music Journal

"They understand collaboration makes a great band, not competition, and this is a great band" - Richmond Music Journal

"...their groove work is busier than most funked-up rhythm sections, but they have the chops to back it up."
-C-Ville Weekly

"... it'll be hard to find anyone doing it better..."
- Richmond Music Journal

"Modern Groove Syndicate is poised to follow in the footsteps of their now famous predecessors [Dave Matthews Band] with their own unique grooves."
- Punchline

A funky quintet based out of Richmond, VA, Modern Groove's sound is guaranteed to spin your head, stir your soul, and shake your butt. Their genre defying sound is a gumbo of funk, jazz, Latin, soul, hip-hop, and whatever else they might have been listening to that day.

The Modern Groove Syndicate is an instrumental group relying heavily on composition, improvisation, and their own unique brand of energy and individual talents to make their point. While the group's influences are all over the map, one can hear elements of P-Funk, John Cage, Brecker Brothers, the Crusaders, Jimmy Smith, and the Meters within their sound. MGS has shared the stage with a wide variety of bands including: Cracker, The Tom Tom Club, The Samples, Dr. Didg, Agents of Good Roots, Ulu, Jimmies Chicken Shack, Eddie From Ohio, Zen Tricksters, Ike Willis & Project Object, Lake Trout, Schleigho, and Moon Boot Lover. MGS includes members of national recording Agents of Good Roots, Moderico, and Buzby. They've opened for such jazz greats as John Schofield and Chuck Mangione.

"We recorded what you're hearing over a period of two days surrounded by friends, family, and loved ones. We played together live, in one room, and within arms length of each other to try to capture some of that magic feeling and to let the music breath its own breath. What comes across is perfect, because it's not. Dig? We hope that you get out of this what we put in..."

"Modern Groove Syndicate is a powerful funk band..."
author: 9X Magazine

"This Richmond quintet's self-titled debut starts off with the bomb, a killer funk tune called 'Fryin' Eggs & Bacon' that begins with a great sax line, quickly thickened by the four guest horns before breaking into a great fatback groove. The group consists of Daniel Clarke on keyboards, Joel DeNunzio on drums, Todd Herrington on bass, Frank Jackson on guitar, and J. C. Kuhl on tenor sax. They've been together as a quintet since last summer, although selected members have been playing together since 1998. The CD contains all original material, all instrumental (save for the eggs and bacon chant and a small bit on 'Mullets'), all in a classic funk vein with soul/jazz flavoring, particularly on some of the keyboard solos. Clarke's especially adept on organ, and he cooks--check out his playing on 'Bocci Balls' and 'Coast to Coast.' He also wrote the horn arrangements, and seems to be the main soloist. Jackson contributes a hot guitar solo on 'Coast,' he's equally comfortable with funk comping and jazz-rock leads. You can't have good funk without a good funk rhythm section, and Herrington and DeNunzio's bass and drums are solid; they certainly fir the bill. They work really well together in laying down rock-solid funk foundations for the rest of the band to play on. Kuhl only solos on 'Eggs & Bacon;' it'd be nice to hear more of him in this setting. 'Bocci Balls' has a clever head played by bass and harmonium and echoed by guitar, reminiscent of late GAUCHO-era Steely Dan, but saved from being quite that slick by the hard funk drumming. 'Chewin' the Fat' starts off with quiet storm-style electric piano patterns before breaking into a medium tempo groove that's a cross between Booker T. & the MGs and Parliament, with yet another killer drum beat that may be the best on the recording. MGS plays together so well that it's hard to single out individual players, but I can't rave enough about DeNunzio's drumming. He's got a hard snare attack, with heavy rimshots on the backbeat that are perfectly suited for this kind of dance music. It’s really refreshing to hear a drummer who's not afraid to smack it. Even on the quieter passages, he's always cooking, and he doesn't hold back on the snare. The band's press kit labels them an 'acid/jazz funk band'--I'd say the emphasis is on the funk. The group they remind me of the most is Tower of Power, even though they're not listed in the kit as one of their influences--see that group's Chester Thompson-penned instrumentals like 'Squib Cakes' and 'Walkin Up Hip Street' for immediate precedents. Modern Groove Syndicate is a powerful funk band, one Richmond can be proud of, and if this debut CD is any indication, they've got a strong future. They can be seen live on Tuesdays in Richmond at the Cary Street Café, and on Wednesdays in Charlottesville at the Outback Lodge. They're definitely worth checking out in person. One caveat: at 35 minutes, the CD is way too short! -Sam Byrd
