Album Notes

Boundary-free, horizon-expanding, kickass, genre-bending, transcendent, soulful, mind-opening, exquisitely gorgeous instrumental solo acoustic guitar. Michael Gulezian (gu-LAY-ze-in) continues to amaze fellow musicians as well as audiences new to the art of instrumental solo acoustic guitar. If you’ve never heard of Michael, you’re in for a very pleasant surprise. He is one of the most highly regarded instrumental acoustic artists of our time. While it is visually breathtaking to watch him perform, a Michael Gulezian concert is more than a display of cutting-edge virtuosity – it is the communion of a master musician engaged with his audience in the mystery of self-revelation, creating music of atmospheric power, ecstatic joy, and haunting beauty.

Michael Gulezian celebrates his first twenty five years as composer / recording / performing artist with his first ever live concert release, CONCERT AT ST. OLAF COLLEGE. For more than two decades, Michael has unpretentiously walked onstage and delivered one riveting performance after another, firmly establishing himself as one of the most significant artists in the solo acoustic genre.

CONCERT AT ST. OLAF COLLEGE is reminiscent of the groundbreaking tone, tenor, and timbre of Michael’s critically acclaimed Takoma Records debut, UNSPOKEN INTENTIONS. All nine songs are performed in open tunings; five are performed on 12-string guitar, and four with bottleneck slide. In addition to his original pieces, Michael includes an overdriven cover of Leo Kottke's "Watermelon," and an other-worldly rendition of J.S. Bach’s "Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring."

There are a lot of talented instrumental acoustic guitarists out there, but Michael Gulezian is one pf the only ones who can truly throw down with the like of Alex de Grassi and Pierre Bensusan for sheer musicality and originality. It's not just that his music has solid rhythm and good melodies. It's that it honestly does not sound like anyone else I've heard (out of around 400 guitar recordings in my collection). Listen to the sample of "Mile High Country" to see what I mean: there's something about it that has always sounded familiar to me, but I can't put my finger on it. I think it's because, even with the relatively simple and pleasant melody that drives this piece, he manages to pack in a huge amount of sophistication and nuance, in nearly every are area of the performance: rhythmic syncopation, groove, dynamics, and tone color. It's too bad the sample doesn't include the ending coda, which is just spectacular. Also missing from the samples are "Slugbug" and "Whale in the Sky", which both grabbed me by the throat the first time I heard them, and have remained among my favorites over 10 years and hundreds of listenings. Anyway, Gulezian has always been one of those guys who deserves to be filthy rich from his music. Pick this one up, and go looking for "Language of the Flame", "Dare of an Angel", and "Unspoken Intentions". You'll thank me for it.
