Growing up near the Gulf Coast of Texas, Michael Hickman developed an interest in music at an early age. The great nephew of the late Joe Holley, the left handed fiddler for Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys, Michael's musical journey began by listening to Buddy Holly and Elvis on the family car radio and top 40 hits on his first transistor radio. Receiving a guitar for his 17th birthday, his interests quickly turned to the folk music of the early 60's influenced by such artists as The Kingston Trio, Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. Galvanized by the Beatles, an architecture degree gave way to his love of music and the songs playing in his head.
In the late 60's Michael honed his vocal and instrumental techniques in the all night trenches of the infamous Cellar Clubs of Texas. The early 70's in Houston saw the formation of Deerfield, a five piece original music band. He and the other members of the band concentrated on songwriting and this lead to a self produced album. The mid to late 70's brought Michael's songwriting craft into its' own identity. As half of the duo Walters & Hickman, he extensively toured the western half of the U.S., leaving Texas and settling in Tucson, Arizona. There he added the magic of the desert southwest to his Texas roots and music.
Desiring a break from the musical rat race in the 80's, Michael left to pursue other interests, but at the urging of close friends and feeling he was missing a key part of his life, returned refreshed and with a new desire, determination and creative spark. He brings a thoughtful blend of folk, rock, country and a bit of the Carribean and Mexico to his music, weaving stories of actual and imagined experiences from this highway we call life. His songs are heartfelt, often tempered with humor and wit. Once you listen to Michael Hickman, his songs will creep into your mind and you will be taken in by their enchanting appeal. It's Folk and Roll... And so, the journey continues......

Diverse musical styles meld into pleasing effort
author: Brown Bunny
Long Distance Runner is a very pleasing foray into the various musical styles that make up the musical palette of Michael Hickman's music. From the rocking slide guitar of 'lonely.com #2' to the beautiful balad, 'Here's One Just For You', to the folk gem 'lonely.com #1', to the coutry flavored title track, 'Long Distance Runner. I can highly recommend this cd to lovers of folk rock.
