Album Notes

A note from Frank:
I have a new CD, it’s called “The Del Ray Sessions” and I hope you’ll really like it. It’s what I call “Alternative-Country” with a pop sensibility. The songs came from a musical that I’ve been writing off and on for the last four years. I started with 19 songs and there are 13 of them here. I like the way these work together on this CD. . .I’d be curious to hear what you think.

Recording a CD while raising a family and working full time in the field of video is a daunting task. That’s why I did this CD in small sections. I would lay down 3 or 4 tracks at at time with Rocky on Drums and Carolyn on vocals. Slowly but surely, over the course of two and half years I reached my goal of finishing the CD. I was lucky to have the constant support of Rocky Sabini on Drums, Carolyn Milligan’s exquisite voice, and friends like Chico Welch, Heather Moran, Scott Brewer, Mark Braun, and Bruce Meyer to lay down tracks. Adrian Dinu did an incredible job as an engineer, co-producer, and harmony singer. His good work and energy was key to getting this done.

The listener will notice that I don’t sing lead on all of the tracks, I share that duty with Carolyn Milligan and Heather Moran. As a musical, there will be different voices singing these songs, so the female vocals are going to represent one or more of the female leads. At his point in my life, I like the idea of others performing my music. I’m having some luck with that now with my first musical Lust’n Rust which is published by Samuel French. My wife Elaine and I just went to Connecticut to see the latest performance of it, and it’s really a kick to see others perform something you wrote in your living room.

Well that‘s it in a nutshell. I hope you like it. Let me know what you think. The CD is only available on CD baby.com. Thanks, enjoy listening!

Fun for the whole family

I do most of my music-listening these days in my suburban assault vehicle, while ferrying spawn to and from school. (It's a long drive.) I popped "The Del Ray Sessions" into the box and let me tell you what happened. I figured this was going to be all about Dad -- being a fan, as I am, of Frank Haney and his various collaborators -- but it turns out the spawn (11, 6, 4 and 3) also dug it. In fact, the day after we listened to it on the drive home, I got a request from the 6-year-old to play it again. It has been in heavy rotation since. The lyrics are witty -- as we expect from Haney and Company -- but the melodies are intensely memorable. I recommend this highly as the not-yet-widely-discovered gem of the year. Be the first -- and not to mention hippest -- on your block and pick up this excellent CD.

Such a broad spectrum of influence and talent

I was very please recently to be able to perform in on of Frank Haney's plays, and learn about his music. I recently had the pleasure of finding this CD and in three words - I love it. I love the arrangements, the harmonies, and if you're either looking for a CD to enjoy around the house, or especially to enjoy on a long trip somewhere, look no further. This is the best kept secret in music. It's got influences from (in no order) America, Buck Owens, Johnny Cash, John Hartford, Steve Goodman, Jim Croce and many others. Being a musician myself, I highly suggest "The Del Ray Sessions!"

Excellent

All the tunes are entertaining and evocative, and the CD even has a risqué moment or two. Performances are first-rate throughout. Particularly enjoyed the opening number, “How Did I Get Here.”
