Album Notes

Fans of the acerbic lyrical frankness exhibited by such artists as Fiona Apple may have found themselves a new obsession. Waiting to Breathe, the debut EP by Mia Zepeda, showcases an enchanting range of styles and subjects, seamlessly transitioning between wistful melodies and wickedly candid lyrics with artful grace.

Nomad extraordinaire, Mia Zepeda is originally from nowhere in particular. Born in the Dominican Republic to Peace Corps volunteer parents (a wildlife biologist and a forester), Mia grew up moving from state to state to not-quite-a-state and back again, including parts of California, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Montana, Arizona and New Mexico.

Mia began her musical journey at age 5, picking out songs by ear on the piano, and taking more formal lessons from her mother as part of her home school curriculum. She started writing poetry around the same time, but never thought to put the two together until much later, when she left her high school town in Oregon for a collegiate adventure in Florida. While attending Florida State University Mia met and quickly befriended singer/songwriter Tori Sparks, who taught her to play guitar, and soon afterwards the music and poetry finally came together.

To learn more about the music industry, Mia interned at Lifeline Audio & Entertainment her last semester, and ultimately recorded two of the tracks for “Waiting to Breathe” there (“Amateurs” and “Forever”). After graduation, Mia moved to Austin, Texas in search of the traditional day job. While living in Austin she spent most of her time writing, rewriting and perfecting her songs. In the spring of 2007, she traveled to Nashville to record again, this time at Prime Cut Studio, to finally finish putting together the tracks for “Waiting to Breathe”.

Shortly after the release of "Waiting to Breathe", Mia suffered from a serious case of restlessness, prompting her to pack her bags and move to South Korea. These days she can be seen performing at various gigs around the Seoul area.

An intimate self-portrait set to refreshinglingy original music
author: Sonia P.

This is what singer/songwriters should sound like. It's hard to believe Mia Zepeda is almost entirely self-taught after listening to this album. The melodies get your attention, while the sincerity with which the lyrics are perfectly woven into the music make you feel as if Zepeda's let you in on a secret, an intimate self-portrait normally reserved for the closest of friends. It's enough to keep you wishing, hoping, praying for a full length . . . soon!

An Album Worth Owning
author: J. Campa

In her self-produced freshman effort “Waiting to Breathe,” Mia Zepeda effectively combines ironically insightful lyrics with catchy melodies to create, in my opinion, one of the most listener friendly albums of this year. In only five songs Ms. Zepeda demonstrates her artistic range with her radio-pop friendly tune “Waiting to Breathe” to the heart-wrenching honesty of “Fourteen.” She provides the ideal balance between catchy musical arrangements and intelligent lyrics, ensuring that even the most skeptical of listeners will find themselves humming, if not full out singing along. The album is itself is a treat, as Ms. Zepeda designed and created all the artwork. It is the aesthetic version of her originality and artistic talent. Overall, this is an album worth owning, and I think we can expect great things to come from this young lady.

Think Ella meets hippie folk goddess...
author: Tori Sparks

Miz Mia has been known to convert even die-hard metalheads to the acoustic realm. Very few artists take you on an aural journey the way she does, and without relying on massive production to make it happen. 14-year-old girls and grownups can both latch onto the sincerity inherent in her lyrics and vocals. Think Ella meets hippie folk goddess, with a dash 'o' chili powder thrown in. The cover art says it all -- there's a little bit 'o' sunrise in even the darkest song on the EP (Happiness Instead). It also happens to be the sexiest song, and my personal favorite.

Five beautiful tracks! I really loved the cd, I have to say that after a long run at the top, Waiting to Breath has been dethroned by Fourteen as my favorite Mia Zepeda song.
