Global Rhythm Magazine August 2005 COLETTE MICHAAN First Cause Creatrix  CM01 Flautist/ composer Colette Michaan has been a live fixture on the New York jazz scene for years, and has worked and performed with everyone from Kenny Barron and Nestor Torres to Richard Bona and Youssou N’Dour, so it’s no surprise that her debut, First Cause, is smart, confident and self-assured. Collaborating with Cuban flautist Oriente Lopez (who arranged the album), Michaan leads a 12-piece band through a spirited set of 10 Latin-tinged originals and standards. Her reference points include jazz, son, timba, cha-cha-cha, calypso and even a bit of Yoruba folklore. Standout tracks include the title track, the swinging descarga “Split,” and Guillermo Rodriguez Fiffe’s 1957 classic “Bilongo.” The musicianship on these tracks is first rate, and the band stretches out smoothly, settling into a relaxed groove early on that never wavers or lets up. First Cause is an impressive debut that should leave listeners begging for seconds. PILAR ALVAREZ

Awesome album with participation of some of the best names in latin and world music jazz scene: Richard Bona, Horacio El negro Hernandez, Oriente Lopez and others. A cuban-latin jazz album perfectly made and well conceived. Michaan with her flute improvisations and subtle plays let's all members of the band take care of business in a group oriented way that is close to a continuos 'descarga' in each song. Kudos to Ms. Michaan and the other stellar musicians in First Cause. What a pleasure to be taken on this exotic journey through their music. Suave y caliente! I especially love her original composition, Rhythm of Love, her adaptaton of Ogun Belele, and to my surprise, one of my favorite old classics, Lagrimas Negras. A fabulous listening mix!
