“Backroads” is a collection of 14 tunes (mostly) steeped in the American music tradition. Although not completely “bluegrass”, some of the material could fit into that genre. Americana is another category that has grown in popularity which may be more accurate. This collection grows out of the American tradition of Appalachian fiddle tunes, blues, American folk songs, and the use of traditional acoustic instruments.
Michael and sound engineer, Chris Caswell, assembled an impressive group of musicians, including the legendary harmonica player Will Scarlett (Hot Tuna, Old and in the Way, David Bromberg, among others); Radim Zenkl, winner of the cherished National Mandolin Championship; Annie Staninec, an exciting young fiddler who plays with two Bay Area groups and winner of the Djangofest 2006 Dudley Award; Gene Tortora, a highly revered master of the 8-string resophonic guitar (aka Dobro); among other exceptional players.
Initial response to the CD: "I totally enjoyed this CD...each selection, in terms of the music, playing, arrangements, etc, is fresh and enjoyable..." "Backroads' showcases Michael's tasty guitar picking, surrounded by good friends who clearly love playing music as much as he does"...Danny Carnahan, Red House recording artist and producer..."...infectious melodies, and stellar musianship...'Backroads' is a must for lovers of acoustic music....' John Russell, SF Bay Area composer and producer
