Iconoclast Michael ONeill Does It Right. Again.
author: No Depression Jim Pipkin
When I first heard Michael ONeill's "Who's Bad Now?" back in 2006 I thought to myself, yeh, that's a track only a road warrior could pull off. My next thought was, "Where the Hell have you been, Michael?" When I got the word that not only was ONeill back in the business, but working with Townes Van Zandt's widow Jeanene to bring a Townes song to life on a new project, my ears perked up. I had to hear this. We had to hang fire a couple three years, but it was well worth the wait.
First, a few words about Michael ONeill, Man of Mystery. This is a man who toured, wrote, and played like crazy, co-wrote with some of the biggest names in the business, and then WHAM - just walked away from it all. I mean the man freaking disappeared. Some people said Mexico, some said Africa, most said two jumps ahead of the law. He turns up over a decade later, hair gone white, with a sackful of new songs and the chops to fire them up. Spooky.
The feel of the title track took me completely by surprise. It was recorded in Austin, at Padernales, where so much fine Outlaw Country has been spanked outta the strings. It does great credit to the tradition, but with a twist.
"Ain't Leavin' Your Love" is a whimsical Townes tune, a Texas-flavored hybrid that hovers between Twang and Soul. Both come through on this effort, with the fine vocals of Hayes Carll and Regina McCrary blending effortlessly with ONeill's. Most importantly, the sense of pure FUN in this song has been nailed, and I doubt we'll hear a better treatment.
The remaining nine songs are Michael's. Each and every one of them stands alone as a unique work, with a Who's Who of choice string-benders sitting in. Lloyd Maines on steel and dobro. Will Sexton and Doug DeForest on bass. Dony Wynn on percussion. And that just scratches the surface.
Not hard at all to explain just how the album left me feeling. I'd have to say it felt like I'd just sat through the most perfect campfire jam of my life. Or stumbled on a haunted festival stage in the wee hours, populated by ghosts from the days before Americana had a name, and we just called it "our music".
"Ain't Leavin' Your Love" is going to be released on New Year's Day, 2010, by Sleeping Trout Music. Because of that, it does not make my "Best Of" list for 2009, but raises the bar pretty damn high for next year's contenders.
You need to make it your New Year's resolution to track this cd down and own it by January 2.
