Album Notes

Modern is old again.... welcomed is the return of the focused, well crafted rock and roll song. Welcomed is Michael Trent, a rock and roll romantic songwriter of the most classic tradition. Michael Trent is both prolific and well revised. He currently functions as the front man and primary songwriter for the NYC rock band The Films. He is also 50 percent of the alt gospel/goth country duo Shovels and Rope, and maintains still enough material to have recorded one solo album and the prospect of another in the near future. He bears the pop sensibility of the 60's British invasion, the sardonic wit of Elvis Costello, emotional poigniancy of Elliot Smith, and the Townes Van Zant- like turn of phrase. So good
author: Hawkins
The exact same swaggeringly brilliant type of lyrics and vocals as The Films, only this time in beautiful (slightly country- inspired?) folky- pop songs. The downbeat and upbeat are perfectly balanced, no song feels like filler, and the whole thing is just all- around brilliant. It's my (mostly pop music) girlfriend's new favourite album, and it's been one of mine (mostly pretentious indie, alternative, alt- country, and pitchfork- approved music) for a long time.
