Review by Juanita McGowen Appleby
author: Joseph McSheffrey
Direct from the widely recognized home of the blues comes the collaborative album “Prescription for the Blues” spearheaded by the dynamic duo of Ari Mintz and Joe Mick.
The pair have immortalised their evening jam sessions at Reggie’s Music Joint in Chicago with 15 songs of addictive blues, jazz and rock - guaranteed to cure what ails ya.
The album starts off with a synergetic instrumental, “Stevie’s New Shoes”, featuring no fewer than five guitar solos that demonstrate straight away the classic improv techniques of this family of soulful artists.
Then comes the gravelly vocals of Steve Temkin on the morally stirring “You Think You Got the Blues” (You got up this morning - you had your toast and tea – or maybe ham and biscuits – but mister can’t you see – what you ate from that plate – could feed a whole family) and on the emotional classic in the making “Deny, Deny, Deny”.
This is a competently arranged and mixed album and the track that blew my mind was the instrumental “Tomorrow Never Knows”. Just a basic trio – the legendary session guitarist Gary Gand, Billy Shaffer on drums and Ari Mintz on bass does justice to this psychedelic Beatles masterpiece with an inspired interjection of the Fab Four’s “Within You Without You”.
There’s just enough variety that you don’t get comfortable with this album.
Tracks like “Wang Dang Doodle” combines traditional jazzy lyrics, powerful female vocals, and a clean tickling of the ivories with distorted guitar riffs.
Contrasted with “Amelia” and “In Your Grace” which are poetic, soft rock songs with minimal sonic bombardment.
But just when you think the songs are straying too far away from its roots, the album yanks you back into the world of the smoky joints of south side Chicago.
And that’s what Joe Mick and the self-professed Doc O’Rock, Ari Mintz wanted to do - showcase the talented, independent artistry of the modern Chicago music scene to the masses. They represented well.
