"A varied and enjoyable selection of slightly country-flavored originals by a writer with a talent for writing catchy, uptempo melodies (try not singing along to "Juanita's In Love"). With a hint of John Denver in his vocals, this extremely capable guitarist makes great use of mandolins, fiddle, banjos, accordion and backing vocals. I wish all singer-songwriter albums were this rewarding." Dirty Linen Oct/Nov 1997

"Mike is a Singer-Songwriter steeped in the American folk tradition. He is a crafted songwriter who tells compelling, entertaining stories." -JOHN WILLMOT, EDITOR CELTICWAYS.COM

Mike Breen is another valid singer/songwriter who, thru his own label, invites you to contact him directly, as he enjoys no distribution from here. No Excuses, his first record, is a collection of songs written by the same Mr. Breen. The songs are pervaded by a certain melancholy, played and sung "con molto gusto." It's a delicate product, as are the feelings dealt with in the songs. I don't know any of the musicians involved therefore I imagine that their fame is not on a national level, but that doesn't take away from their bravura which is well represented here. Acoustic country music, intelligent lyrics, at times poetic, performed by the author Mike Breen -- a name we hope to hear again soon. Bravo Mike!!

"Mike Breen blends slick, pop-friendly vocal melodies with Crazy Horse-like rock-damaged country/folk grooves."

REVIEWS

great blend of themes & elements
author: margie cunningham
My first indie purchase, this CD was fabulous! I have played it almost exclusively while at work. Catchy refrains (no excuses is running thru my head right now), incredible harmonies, and lyrics that tell real stories. A nice balance of sad (great wall of china, someone),upbeat (juanita's in love, pennsylvania farm), and touching songs (sunday morning song, someone like me).
