A native of Hamburg, Germany, Mike Meier taught himself to play guitar at age 12 with an old acoustic guitar he received as a gift. Later, with his first electric guitar, he turned an old tape recorder into his first amplifier.
At 23, Mike went to Argentina and studied with one of the foremost tango guitarists, Carlos Luna. Neither one could read music. Carlos and Mike remained close friends, and performed together at such celebrated tango venues as El Farolito and Café Tortoni, every year until Carlos’ death in 2003. The syncopated rhythms and Latin American influence in Mike’s music reflect the impact of his extraordinary time in Argentina.
Since moving to Washington, D.C. in 1990, Mike has performed in a variety of local venues including the National Endowment for the Arts Hispanic Heritage Celebration, the Capitol Hill Community Arts Festival, Eastern Market Gallery, Hispanic Heritage Month at George Mason University, and various coffee houses. Mike performed with renowned Taiko drummer Kenny Endo at the opening of the 2006 National Cherry Blossom Festival.
He has received several music awards, including a grant from the D.C. Commission of Arts and Humanities. In 2003, Mike released a CD of classical guitar, Acoustic Guitar.
In real life, Mike is a member of America’s most hated profession.
