Guitarist and composer, Mike Pardew currently lives in Portland, Oregon. He maintains a regular performance schedule as a solo artist and as an accompanist for many jazz artists throughout the West Coast. Mike also composes many pieces for several Portland – area jazz ensembles and leads the Cuerda Jazz Series one Thursday each month. As a follow up to 2007’s “Transgression” (Afan Music) Mike is currently promoting his new release “Azul” (Afan Music).
Born and raised in the town of Dallas, Oregon, Mike started piano lessons at the age of six. After a brief tenure on trombone in the school band, Mike decided to quit after receiving an ‘F.’ Discouragingly enough, the band teacher failed to make the distinction between Mike and the other two students when passing out failing grades. That experience turned out to be a blessing in disguise after he started lessons with his brother’s teacher, Terry Bay, shortly thereafter and grew to love the guitar.
Throughout the years of 2000 and 2001, Mike was a resident of Oviedo, Asturias in Northern Spain. During this time in Spain, he performed throughout the Northern cities of La Coruna, Oviedo, Santander, and Pendueles. The experience forged a strong presence of Spanish and Cuban music in Mike’s compositions, as he was immersed in the community of Cuban musicians living throughout Northern Spain.
Mike Pardew has actively worked an instructor specializing in Jazz Guitar since 1995. Mike currently teaches Jazz Guitar at various Portland area colleges and workshops as well as his own music school in SE Portland, Cadenza Academy.
