"This is the second time I've ventured into the shadows to make a recording. (The first time was for the 1997 audio recording, Mama Gone and Other Stories to Trouble Your Sleep.) These stories have themes as old as nursery tales and as current as the headlines. There's treachery aplenty, lots of judgment and little justice. How like the world we live in!"
An internationally known performer, award-winning recording artist, acclaimed writer of modern fairytales and sought-after teacher of her craft, Milbre Burch is a storyteller in every sense of the word. A 30-year veteran of theatre, spoken word and storytelling festivals throughout the USA and in Europe, she lives with her husband and two daughters under the wide blue sky of Columbia, Missouri.
"Sop Doll," the title story in this new collection, was published in April, 2001, by Realms of Fantasy magazine. The story was reprinted in The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror: Fifteenth Annual Collection edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling this summer.
Here's what people say about Sop Doll and Other Tales of Mystery and Mayhem:
"Sop Doll" is a brilliant story in the strongest fairy tale tradition with just enough spooky stuff going on to make it special.

Your "Sop Doll" is fascinating, absolutely riveting, a triumph.

A great little tale -- full of the energy found in many of the original fairy tales that were created for adults and children alike.

Milbre takes us to the realm of the dark queen. Her rendition of Snow White is gripping. Her brilliant use of the English language on this recording is its own reward.
