Miles To Go is an 80% female bluegrass band. They use this ratio to their advantage by singing siren songs that will draw you into a trance and possibly love you up and turn you into a toad. The band is Cassie Singley on lead vocals and frailing banjo, Tamilisa Wood and Hilary Barlow both play mandolin and fiddle and sing beautiful harmonies, Maggie Sabey plays bass and Trent McCausland plays guitar.
Miles To Go has a unique and pleasing sound distinguished by its powerful vocals and fine instrumentation. The trio of harmonies has been compared to watching birds diving and swooping around each other in an almost choreographed dance. It’s truly enchanting.
This is the band's debut CD. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it. Here's a little info on each song:
Asheville – Hilary wrote this after too many months of cold, snowy weather. She loves Asheville, NC, a bluegrass Mecca. Maybe some day she’ll take us there.
Ride on a Train – This is a Judith Edelman song. We started playing this one in our band’s infancy and it’s always been a favorite.
A Girl’s Song – Trent showed up one night with this beautiful poem by Leslie Norris. Leslie’s wife, Kitty, had once told Trent that he was such a “serious boy” and needed a hobby. He picked up the guitar. Leslie passed away shortly after recording his remarks on this CD. We are truly blessed and honored to have his approval and work on this project.
Duluth – Sultrified Mason Jennings. This siren song could well be a powerful tool for any girl wanting to lure an unsuspecting traveler.
Goodnight Peter Pan – Cassie wrote this after a break-up. Her mom is convinced that this song will be her romantic demise.
Hard Times – Haven’t we all had them? We love Maggie’s bowing on this number.
Gypsy Wagon Train – Another great Hilary song. For some reason, Hilary thinks she knows everything about Gypsies, although we’re not sure she’s ever met one. Her grandma, Ruth Kartchner, remembers the gypsy wagons circling up in Provo’s North Park. Her stories were the inspiration for this song.
Grow Old with Me – Cassie’s attempt to redeem herself.
Long Gone Lonesome Blues – Good Ol’ Hank Williams…when country was cool. This is Rusty the Mule’s favorite tune. Cassie’s yodeling gets her braying like crazy.
Are You Washed – Tamilisa sings this one. Her mandolin break is the coolest on the CD. Special thanks to Reverend Davis for his spirit and enthusiasm for the gospel.
Maybe – This is a bitter song and we’re bitter too because we had to pay handsomely for it. Enjoy this song ‘cause it’s worth its weight in gold.
Orphan Train – This was a last minute add. We would sing this with Amanda (4) and Lucy (2) Groberg while waiting to record. We loved their voices so much we had to put them on the CD. We tried to adopt them into the band but Geoff (their dad, our producer) said they were too young to go on tour, which seems odd since we haven’t made it out of the state…yet.
Hallelujah – We always like to close with this gospel number. And besides we could all use a little more religion in our lives.

Sirens, Mandolins, Violins, and Fiddles! Guitar and Bass

Miles To Go’s first album, “May I come with you”, takes its title from “A Girls Song”, a theme that resonates throughout the disc. The album gallops out of the gate with an upbeat original work “Asheville” penned by Suzuki trained Hillary Barlow. This number laments the snows of Utah and takes off flying to the bluegrass capitol of North Carolina. The band scalds the listeners mind with that “hot and lonesome” sound in virtuoso Cassie Singley’s “Goodnight Peter Pan”. One can only imagine what these vixen’s are ready for in the gospel number “Hallelujah”. That question gets answered in the siren chant of “Duluth”. The highlight of the album is Barlow’s “Gypsy Wagon Train”. The song’s intro takes time to showcase each musician and leaves a hauntingly beautiful taste in the mouth. The tracks are littered with 3 part harmonies featuring Tamilisa Wood, Barlow and Singley. Bluegrass critics with their sharp talons perched in their aeries, will notice Miles To Go added a decidedly “not bluegrass” cover tune “Maybe” to the track list. The album shines like polished steel with two train based covers, “Ride on a Train” by Judith Edelman and the second a saddening tale of the West “Orphan Train” by Utah Phillips. Dig into this album and let the gems fill your gunnysack as each cut glistens with the band’s collective talent.
