Milkshake is the duo of Lisa Mathews and Mikel Gehl, both members of the popular rock group LOVE RiOT. After becoming new parents (Lisa has a daughter, Mikel a son), they found themselves thinking up songs to entertain their toddlers. The resulting recording features music as tuneful and alive as that found on the LOVE RiOT recordings (see the LOVE RiOT CD Baby page for more info), and indeed we think fans of the band will love many of the songs featured on Happy Songs.
Contemporary, fun, educational and heartwarming, Milkshake's debut recording Happy Songs is a potpourri of activity songs, upbeat rock songs and lullabies released on Milkshake Music.
Milkshake's original songs are based in the pop-rock genre, and influenced by both the years spent performing tuneful, melodic music in their rock band alter ego Love Riot, and the classic sounds of great groups like the Beatles.
Both Mathews' and Gehl's songs have been featured on network television programs (NBC-TV's Providence, Homicide: Life on the Street, All My Children, Passions; ABC-TV's JAG, One Life To Live), MTV, the Oxygen Channel, Disney's ZGames 2000, and the Showtime Network. Their music is noted for it's multi-generational appeal, and the musicians have performed on such diverse venues as prime-time television, Lilith Fair and a mountain stage in Japan.

Happy Song
author: Layla cohenMy kids want to hear the happy song over and over - a great CD for young and old!
A really groovy kids collection. Lovely songs, but still contempory and not too
author: Karla ObermoserMy kids love this CD and the good thing is, I like it too. Its like listening to your favourite songs - only the texts are so appropriate for young children.

author: Chris TuckerOur family loves this CD! Found it at the library and scoured local bookstores to buy a copy but was told it was out of print. Found it online through this site and was thrilled!!! This is a must for a new mom!!! It is so upbeat and fun! thank you
A must have CD!
author: Sandi ForaciVery catchy tunes. My daugther can easily pick up the beat and learn the words. She's three and is a Milkshake fan already. She even sings their songs when the CD isn't playing...that's a true sign of success.
Great CD
author: JqfrielMy two kids love Noggin and they love Milkshake! This CD is a great CD for kids and adults. I sing along with both my kids in the car. We love -- I'M NOT SCARED!!!!
My daughter loves this cd.
author: ValerieMy 27 month old loves to sing and this in one of her favorite cd's. We love it since it's not to corny and we sing right along with her.
Happy Songs is amazing!
author: RobertHappy Songs is an amazing CD. My daughter fell in love with Milkshake watching Noggin. I bought Bottle of Sunshine as well, and was just as impressed. I admit to sneaking these CDs into my car more than once, and I'm a picky listener. Highly recommended songs that are fun and engaging, not just foo-foo fluff. The lyrics actually get you to think a lot more than with typical kids music.
A great change of pace
author: Kristen RamsayWe recently discovered Milkshake and with haste any parent that has heard every wiggles song 500000 times can understand, picked up both "Happy Songs" and "Bottle of Sunshine". The music is far more melodic than the average children's CD, and doesn't grate on the ears despite repeated listenings. "Happy Songs" works really well as the last CD before nap/bed as the songs in the latter third of the CD slow way down, and are more soothing than "catchy".
Hurray! Music we can all enjoy!
author: JenniferI was SO sick of listening to the Wiggles all the time so I am thrilled to have found Milkshake because I think they are great too. My 3 yr old twin girls learned the words and sing and dance to this music now all the time- their fave is Happy Song. We have seen them twice in person and they are great performers with the kids. I gave this cd 4 stars but I would give Bottle of Sunshine 5 stars- slightly more peppy songs for the kids. Either way can't go wrong!
- author: Missy
saw this duo in southern Md. was really impressed, came home and bought both their cd's, this one was really fun, I personally enjoyed their bottle of sunshine more. My children, two girls, 4 and 7 love this cd and I don't mind at all, listening to it going down the road!
Good, but like Bottle of Sunshine better
author: Allison MowerLove Milkshake and this cd and Happy Song is a good one, but I like their newer cd much better, "Bottle of Sunshine". I think the songs on their first cd aren't as "catchy" and my kids are always asking to change the cd after the first couple songs. Still much better than most of the children's cds out there, however.
I have a 7 yr old with no sight and a 4 yr old who both LOVE this CD!!
author: Leigh GaddyMy 7 yr old cannot see but really jams to this CD...my 4 yr old likes to dance to it!!
Mom & Dad like it too!
author: SandraWe originally borrowed this from the library and liked it so much that we decided to purchase our own copy! It has catchy, fun tunes that we find ourselves singing even when the cd is not playing.
Absolutely fantastic as well!
author: Randy G. HerbertMy oldest daughter is a full time nanny for Talia, a wonderful two and a half year old little girl. As of late, Talia would only listen to Raffi, which is certainly not a bad thing, but most of those around her were wishing she would expand her music horizons. I read about Milkshake, knew of Lisa from her Love Riot days, and took a listen to her new work. I fell in love and bought both CD's for Talia. One listen later, she (and the rest of us) are new fans. Thank you for giving her a new horizon for her musical exploration.
We love it!
author: DerekAll my girls (7, 4, & 2) love the CD. What makes it even more special is when I asked my wife what she thought. Her response was: "I'm not sure who likes it more; me or the girls."
Our new favorite CD!
author: Jerri K.My son, age 5, has asked for this CD practically every morning since he got it, right after his cup of milk. He lies on the sofa singing along. I can't wait for Santa to bring him the 2nd one. Even the "tween" in our house likes it.
Love this
author: JulietWe adore this CD and look forward to seeing them live this Sunday at the Baltimore Museum of Art!
Awesome! Fun tunes! Love to listen to them!
author: Lauren SkauThis is a great CD - even enjoyable for adults! There are several excellent songs with nice repetitive portions that I will use with the special education preschoolers I work with.
Love it!
author: Meg McManusEvery time we get in the car, my 2-year-old daughter starts screaming BREAKFAST TIME at the top of her lungs. She literally won't stop until the song starts, and then she breaks into the biggest smile imaginable.
Great music, perfect words.
author: Debbie SteinigWe received this CD as a gift, and I loved it right away for the folky, upbeat yet mellow music. After playing it in the background several times, I slowly started noticing the words, too...they're perfect! "I got a pretty face and I guess that's okay, but -- I wanna be tall," could have been written for my (beautiful, tiny) daughter, and "Dance on My Shoes" for her dad. My favorite lyric for our mischievously busy 9-month-old is, "I'm a great artist, cook and inventor, I'm a sweet baby on a big adventure. Ask me what I'm doing, well I ain't telling. Sometimes I'm fooling and that's just swell and that's me." The original, rambling tunes hit just the right balance between complexity and still being singable -- I find myself humming snatches throughout the day. Overall, my favorite kids' CD.
I have to say, that even though I am 23, that was the most emotional thing I hav
author: Joe shnyderThat was a great CD. The blend of music was purely amazing. It all just touched my 23 year old heart. *sniffle*. I think if I could listen to any sound track in the whole world. It would definately be Milkshake. It was just the greatest thing. I mean Breakfast Time and Tall, those songs are pure genious. I don't think I could take it if I didn't raise the money to buy a copy. Purely wonderful.
Great just what I wanted
author: RachelThis CD is great.Just perfect for my school project. The children loved it.
All three of my kids, 4,6, and 9, love this CD.
author: Ellen S.All of my kids love this CD and ask to hear it in the car. It is upbeat and fun to listen to and the songs don't pander to my kids which I really appreciate.
- author: Michele Bracci
My 7 month old twins love this CD and so do I! Every time Happy Songs begins to play they start screaming, smiling and dancing in their seats. After a few days of listening to fingers and toes and watching me count on my hands, they started to move their fingers and hands. It is a fun way to play with your children after a long day at work. Thank you for creating this wonderful music!!!
We love this CD!
author: Carrie RiddickThis is a great CD! I find myself listening to it without the kids. Everyone song is great.......what a great find!
Spunky and beautiful original songs that parent and child alike can love.
author: Anna-Maria WhiteSpunky and beautiful songs, ones that both parent and child can enjoy. My one year old starts moving her hips the moment the first song comes on. It has one of the most lovely lullabies ever written. (When you were born...) I bought several to give away as holiday gifts this year.
Fun and upbeat!
author: JenniferThis is a great CD. My twin daughters just love it.(and I'll admit that I like it too) We made milk shakers to dance around the house. Fun CD that doesn't get old even after 99 times listening to it.
What a find!
author: TerryFresh, different and wholly enjoyable. This CD passes the "repetitive listening" test with flying colors --in fact, I'm just as likely to want to hear it again as my 19 month old. We love Dan Zanes and are constantly on the lookout for other "parent-friendly" musicians. We eagerly await more output from Milkshake.
What fun songs!
author: Kim HooverThese songs are wonderful! They're the type of songs I would write for my daughter if I had the talent. At 7 months old, she laughs when I sing them to her and I look forward to the day when she can sing them too.
This CD is a lot of fun for all ages!
author: LauraI read about this CD in Parenting and they were right! Our 1 year old enjoys listening and her Mama and Dada think it's great too. We especially like the finger/toes counting song, breakfast song and goodnight moon.
This is a great CD for kids and adults both!
author: Ann GarczynskiMy 4 year old son and I listened to the CD together and we both loved it.
Wonderful! fun music to dance to and sing along with.
author: Beth FrazierMy two-year-old son often sings songs from this wonderful Milkshake CD. My five-year-old daughter, Sophie loves the music, as well. When times are a little stressful in the evenings, we have a little dance party. The songs are fun and share warm, comforting messages for little ones. I highly recommend this CD.
It is a really great CD
author: Kristy SmithThis CD is really cool. I've actually found myself listing to it in the car without the kids. It is really something that I do'nt mind hearing over and over again.
Wonderful! My son wants to hear it all day!
author: Brooke DiehlYour Cd is wonderful! I have a 2 year-old son who always wants to listen to his Happy Song. He loves it and so do I! Everytime a song ends I hear a little "Uh-oh", and a "Yea" when the next one starts.
My daughter loves it as do I also, thank you so much....
author: Kim Yates and Heather McRaethe cd is great!! one I definetly dont mind listening too over and over again..my daughter loves it..what a great purchase. Thanks so much.. The McRae family
I listened to this CD this morning with my mom and it was fun.
author: Lane OntiberosThis is a fun CD to listen to in the morning, even when I'm sick with a cold. Thanks and keep up the good work.
You'll find yourself singing these songs long after the kids have gone to bed.
author: Samson Redline / Boys and Girls TogetherImagine finding a children's CD that you actually look forward to listening to. The songs on Milkshake's debut CD are charming and funny and clever and rocking -- all the things I love about my favorite grown-up music. It's an intelligent record -- never talks down to or underestimates the listener, whether that listener is 2 or 52. Of all the CDs I have bought for my daughter, this is her favorite -- her "desert island disc." Once you hear it, you're going to want to play it for everyone you know. And they'll love it, too.
You won't scream upon hearing it for the 600th time.
author: Andy EllisHappy Songs is a charming collection of songs that won't make parents scream upon hearing it for the 600th time. Any parent who can listen to "When You Were Born" and not get tears in their eyes needs to have their heart checked. I've given away six copies (so far) and I know for a fact it resulted in six happy kids.
