Diving Bell Shallows is the debut full-length album from Boston band The Milling Gowns. It is a dark and emotional album that also offers up warmth and hope. Band members include singer/songwriter M., pianist Sharon Crumrine, violinist/violist Betty Widerski and drummer Allen Esser. On this record, they use full string sections, choirs, harp, oboe, even birds and typewriters, and more! The Milling Gowns are rarely mentioned without such descriptive words as \'lush\', \'gorgeous\', \'emotional\' or \'dark\'. And while Diving Bell Shallows is all of these things, it is also surprising, inventive and catchy! This is such an incredible record - it\'s hard to believe it is their first!
\"Diving Bell Shallows has hooks to hang your ears on. The first full-length recording from local band The Milling Gowns reels you in - between the introspective lyrics and the lush arrangements there\'s food for anyone at this buffet. Images abound, from the biblical Lazarus to a sequence that sounds like the ubiquitous meditation tape. Standout tracks for this reviewer include \'Dust for Kissers\', \'Violet Wrist\', \'Cape the Pearls\', and \'Macaw\'. Play this when you\'re looking for the next band to hit it big from Boston.\" -Joann Keesey WMFO Medford, MA

Beautiful songs
author: Jesse Schust
These are beautiful songs - full of mystery and depth. If you are already familiar with 'Macaw' and 'Airedales' from the EP 'Light of the World Shine on Me', you may find the new versions of these songs more melodic and less dark/melancholic.
My personal favorites on this album are 'Cape the Pearls', 'Palace of Owls', and 'Lily of the Mouth'. There's no easy way to describe the range of songs on this album. Suffice it to say the songs have varied moods and melodies. Many songs take you on musical journies with varied settings - dense musical forests, empty open fields of voice and piano, and rolling hills of duets and trios (voice, piano, and violin mainly). A delicious chaos threads its way through many of these songs - this is well illustrated by 'Drug Company' and 'The Stars Nest'
This is a beautiful collection of songs. M's voice remains completely absorbing (though a little more hidden in some of the song mixes than I'd prefer). The more I listen, the more I get from these songs.

Dark without Stark
author: Caite
The Milling Gowns\' full length debut is absolutely smashing. It has the crooning quality and dark lushness of Nick Cave or Morrissey without the violent subject matter. Each track is like a complete tasty dish with all the courses present. Each song works in complete harmony and it is definitely a labor of love.
It has the alternative taste while still appealing to the more conventional/casual listener. The booklet design is also stunning. All in all this is a wonderful album and these musicians will go very far!
