  • Milton Marsh - We Are Not Separate From Spirit, We Are In It
    author: Department of Virtuosity (Poland)

This time, I decided to take a rest from heavy music in jazz's favour. Milton R.W. Marsh is an American saxophonist and flautist with over 35-year luggage of musical experiences. He is also a music teacher at State University at Oneonta and State University of Buffalo (both in New York). Aforementioned stuff is a collection of compositions written between 1973 and 1999 and performed by 32 musicians. A main frame of "We are not separate from spirit, We are in it" is based on jazz improvisations with a bit experimental movements and narrative fragments. Here are many instruments: violin, cello, piano, drums, viola, trumpet, trombone, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, percussion, tenor and baritone sax, harp and some vocal parts. None of them rush or speed up at any moment. An attendance of such a great number of instruments makes this stuff rich in various ways of expression. Some tracks sound as if they were recorded especially for movie's soundtrack, and they remind me of an old American classic films. All the musicians are flawless in their parts and thanks to them we are able to sense a magic atmosphere. Summing up, I most like these tunes that are cryptic and mysterious, since they leave the listener with a kind of allusion. Such a genre can be described as nice, pleasant and faint, being an efficient remedy for a tired human being. "We are not separate from spirit, We are in it" is played with a subdued virtuosity. Dear Professor, you have done a great piece of music!
