"A waft of dejavu hovers after spinning Mingo Fishtrap's new platter. Songs hit right from the get-go, like a friend of a friend you immediately dig after meeting. It's clear this funky Austin octet has a deep affinity for the title's alluded-to musical greats - Stevie Wonder, Tower of Power, Rejuvenation-era Meters. Yet this well-crafted album ain't about naked derivation: the 15 original tracks are as fresh as new car smell. The fourth release and second full-length of these Austin Music Award winners, Yesterday is a refinement of form and not a new stylistic direction. Wise choice, as their gumbo of tight 'n' punchy horns, deep rhythms, restless melodies, and emotive singing has garnered Mingo justified respect as a live powerhouse."

This is out of Denton, Texas?

I just wrote a review on their album Private Bag - be sure to check it out if you are interested in these guys. Something that I find interesting is that these guys are out of what was called North Texas State University when I went there. My experience was that it was a fairly stuck-up place for jazz that would definately have turned its nose up at a band like this. Maybe things have changed. Anyway, the musicianship of these guys is excellent. Hey - give the keyboard player a little more solo time - I want to see what he is made of!

THEY HAVE THE FUNK, GOT TO HAVE THE FUNK.
First heard the band at Jazz Bones in Tacoma while waiting to see Cold Blood. I thought it was Tower of Power. WONDERFUL band. I loved the music. When I returned home to San Diego, I bought the CD.
