Album Notes

THE MINSTRELS
Formed: January, 1998 in Rochester, NY

The Minstrels play folk-rock music associated with genres such as folk noir, dark folk, and gothic folk. Their sound is mainly comprised of acoustic and electric guitar, bass, accordion, piano, keyboard, and musical saw. The songs are emotionally direct and usually built on a core of acoustic instrumentation, but liberal use of reverb, delay and other effects often gives them an ethereal quality. In 2005—after playing, recording, and evolving through various lineups—they joined the roster of Klem North Records, a Pennsylvania-based label founded by Samezvous of the band Los Halos. Their debut full-length, “Our Cruel Demise”, was released in August 2006. The follow-up will be released in early 2009.

This is the way gothic music was meant to sound.

Sounding otherworldly, The Minstrels tell tales of loss, melancholy, and darkness. Bleak and stripped down vocals are barren alongside acoustic instruments and ambient soundscapes. Driving rhythms bind it all together. This is the way gothic music was meant to sound.

...gypsy-spinning, sonorous compositions...about transcendence

AstroPOP! for November 2006 By Chris Estey and TIG The world's first and only astrological forecast (and podcast) told entirely in record reviews. It's November, and we've got a new Congress and a new AstroPOP! Rejoice! AstroPOP! for November includes Action Suits, Le Tigre, Oxford Collapse, Bears, Favourite Sons, M. Coast, Archie Bronson Outfit, The Minstrels, and more. Libra (September 23 - October 23) Libra enjoys the dark pleasures of the fall season. Even thoughts of everything ending can give a strange joy to someone so concerned with balance and control. Knowing that we don't control everything helps one embrace the fires and cold night air, and this month's threnody comes to us via The Minstrels. Their elegant ode to decomposition, "Melt Into The Bed," is the perfect way to end the move and look forward to the resurrection in the springtime. Not the most swinging tune on their tellingly named full-length, Our Cruel Demise, but it's not the first time decay comes up as a topic. On this gypsy-spinning, plucked and strummed album the subject matter is usually more about transcendence on sonorous compositions like "Dove Into My Heart" or the zero to the bone "Her Heart The Queen."
