Ever since the first mp3s singles were released there's been worldwide rumble in the pop underground about Miss Mary.When her solo CD Hey Blue! debuted, pop-kids and critics alike were cryin' "gimme, gimme MORE!"

Often compared to Holly GoLightly, April March, and even Jonathan Richman, Miss Mary (aka Mary Stopas) is cute but tough, naive but knowing. Lo-fi but Oh My!

The indie world got their first taste of her garage-pop candy with her sweet vocal harmonies, as well her leads on pop-punk treats like "Superman" and "Don't Look Back!," in the Portsmouth NH based garage group the Oscillators. But it's when she took center stage as a solo artist that she really took off into the "blue."

"Hey Blue!" has got the pop kids tapping their toes and snapping their fingers all around the world. It was even picked up for a special 10" vinyl release by British label WIAIWYA, leading to UK shows in 2001 and 2004.

Helping out on 'Hey Blue!" are Pete Weiss (Doug Yule, Charlie Chesterman, Willard Grant Conspiracy), Greg Porter (Unbunny), Jake Guralnick (Tuffskins, the Eddies), Jeff Mellin (Jeff Mellin & the Midnight Cowboys, the Eddies), Adam Hall, Todd Jones, and Oscillators Joel Mellin & M@ Saunders. The album was produced by Joel Mellin.

    honeydewed, sweet, and versatile. Miss Mary, like the latter day Jonathan Richman, is a lot more knowing and tough than first impressions might imply.... More though most definitely please

  • A good disc to get

    Currently my favorite disc to originate from Boston. Miss Mary (Mary Stopas) fronted The Oscillators for some time before forming her own band. I never listened to The Oscillators, though I saw their ads in local magazine The Noise. I might never have heard Miss Mary were it not for my being late my first day of Web Design class. In the music, vocals, and (great) aesthetics of this disc you can hear a love of Holly Golightly, but this is not a 'Boston's Holly Golightly' thing. Her songs make it much more. They have a worldview that I can relate to more than that of seen-everything Holly. One of the songs ("The Date") captures better than any other that hey-let's-move-this-to-the-next-level feeling that two people get on a date when they are alone, it's late, and they have decided they like each other and want to play but are afraid to make the first move. "The Date" seems to me to be a Year 2000 version of the same feelings The Paper Squares sung about in their (classic) 1992 song "Let's Hang Out". Also really great is "Can't Stop" which has a feel that brings 'Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls' band The Carrie Nation to mind. Like Peaches, Miss Mary is singing provocative songs about being with boys (though certainly less graphic!), but she is in control; clear, strong, and cool. 2 songs have pretty neat trumpet in them. "Summer Days" and the Lee Hazelwood cover "My Baby Cried All Night Long". I like the muted trumpet, brushed drums, and the organ-led arrangement in the Hazelwood cover. "The Cutest Boy" sounds so familiar, but I just can't place what it reminds me of. To get you in the ballpark though I'll say Tallulah Gosh and the elefant band Vacaciones. ... I never lie in my reviews, and I tell you this is a good disc to get.

    Like Miss Mary's look, the sound isn't quite of this time and place. [ Hey Blue!] harks back to the sunnier side of French pop, with plenty of organ, trumpets, and surf guitar. …the disc goes by like a cool breeze. … All of which leads to one question: is this woman for real?

    She stepped out of a re-run of Happy Days, a sassy, gives-as-good-as-she-gets compadre of The Fonz. She stepped straight into your heart. She's got a garage attitude — and I'm not talking about the unfathomable arrogance of the spotty t--t who works nights at the petrol station over the road – but you like that, and you like the clean-cut sound. She sings about love, but you're in love and you love her all the more for it. She is Miss Mary and you are smitten.
