Album Notes

Mitch grew up in the foothills of the Appalachians in Madison County, KY. He spent much of his childhood divided between his grandfathers' houses, one a fox hunter and tobacco farmer who plowed with mules and the other a musician and farmer, of sorts (he grew corn with which he made moonshine). In the course of learning his grandfathers' trades, there was much time for stories, jokes, and especially music. Mitch demonstrated musical talent from an early age, and performed with his mother in a regionally sought-after mountain duo.

At age 17, he set out for the east coast as part of the folk duo Mandala, with whom he played for over 10 years. After moving back to Kentucky , he began to hone his storytelling skills, drawing on the life stories and experiences rare among his generation and those following. In 1996 he met Carla Gover and decided to refocus on his music career as part of a duo based on songwriting, vocal harmony, and perpetuating Appalachian culture. Since then, he has won the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest at Merle Fest and the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Award,The Rocky Mountain Folks fest, and the Telluride Troubadour songwriting contest.

I loved this CD! I love the titles, lyrics and guitar work. I promised Mitch that I would buy a couple CD's after he performed at Boyd County High School in Ashland, Ky. Furthermore, I bought a couple for my Daughter-in-Law for her birthday; she who hails from Lewis County Ky.

Perfect end to a bad day. Mitch performed at my children's school, I was so dreading staying out at school after a miserable day at work!! I'm so glad my daughter, wanted to go. Loved the music, loved his voice and especially the stories. My children loved it so much, we went home with 2 CD's, and listened to them immediately. I always appreciate a good clean laugh and great music.

Bringing Back the Good Old Days

Mitch was such a part of my nights out in college...whether it was at the Phone 3 Lounge or at The Bear and The Bull, his fluid guitar and smooth voice guaranteed a great time. My tapes of Soft Lies have slowly died over the years, thank goodness for technology stepping in to save the day and bring Mitch's voice and my favorite songs back to me...I feel 21 again. Definitely the best money I've spent in a long time.
