Spitting Up Roses was Melany Joy Beck's debut album. Released in early 1996, it became a midwest college staple bolstered by the soaring melodies of "Not That Strong," a track originally featured on The Misery Sessions, Vol. 3 soundtrack. One of the stars of the late-nineties Houghton Music Scene, Beck captured the attention of producer / guitarist Bernie Larsen who produced SUR with the same canny intuition he used to elevate the sounds of Melissa Etheridge and Lucinda Williams. Though, packaged pop acts like Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys pushed literate girl rock off the charts in the latter part of the decade, the record lives on as a time capsule to a more thoughtful age.

Great Disk! Give it a chance, you won't be dissappointed.

I originally heard this disk while at a friend's house while in college a few years ago. I loved it instantly and had to get a copy for myself. Even now it still gets a lot of play time. Catchy tunes, smart lyrics. Not a bad track on the disk, with my favorites including Holding Back, Not That Strong, Poor Jill, Doesn't Matter, and Deaf.
