ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Mary Jenson came from a large family of 8 children; growing up on various Air Force Bases from Germany to California. Classically trained but with a great love of jazz and contemporary music, Mary spent a few years on the Left Coast of California as a small market radio disc jockey, developing a love of music crossing genres and perspectives.

Her 2009 debut CD Close Your Eyes was a reflection of that broad perspective and earned her reviews that acknowledged her wide range:

…this new fan of Mary Jenson is here to tell you that anyone who grooves on innately talented jazz singers must add this new recording to his or her collection…

…West-coast cool; strong, with no tricks…

…It takes a hell of a lot of effort for me to not only like vocal jazz, but for me to want to listen to it. It’s generally on the bottom of my list, but every now and then there’s a singer that makes you want to stop, bow down and worship what you’re hearing. Enter Mary Jenson… Jenson sings jazz, but doesn’t always fit the stereotype of what a “jazz singer” entails, and that’s a good thing. Her voice is far from a stereotype, so listen and see/hear if you agree…

With eclectic music ranging from pop to Jazz and a world flavor in between, Mary is poised to release her second album in January 2011. Beyond is full of rhythmic melodies inspired by the dream state, a human condition of vulnerability and wonder.

Settling in the Bay Area of Northern California, the influence of Jazz cannot be denied in Mary’s music as her residence there is a natural culmination of her musical journey. The vibrant music scene of the Bay Area made collaboration with outstanding musicians a reality for Mary and the making of the CD Beyond is a beautiful example of those associations.

Touting performances from Grammy Winner violinist Mads Tolling to world renown percussionist Alex Acuña, bassist Ralphe Armstrong, and drummer Will Kennedy, this CD includes 4 originals co-written with Producer and Pianist Frank Martin. The contemporary covers of Tom Waits, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell are vividly captured in singular perspective and the jazz standards resonate hauntingly.

Plans for the release of Beyond include concerts and touring. Please visit www.MaryJenson.com for details and sign up for the email list for regular notifications.
