An eclectic spirituality drawn from many inspirations
author: Joe Ross
Percussionist and vocalist M.J. Greenmountain’s self-produced 2008 release gives us an extraordinary melange of instrumental and sampled sounds that prove to be a potent musical elixir for the darkest of days. After the opening chirps of crickets remind one of Baka Beyond’s musical nuances, MJ provides a fluid genesis of melodic electricity with looped rhythm tracks and seductive vocalizing. A sonic alchemist who also has great respect for tradition, Greenmountain provides creative arrangements of an Afro-Cuban chant (Elegua), Brazilian medicine song (Yemanjah), Yoruban chant (Yemonja-Olokun), and Pan-African medley (Atom’s Song). With considerable electronics, MJ’s aesthetic gestures of solidarity also feature tints of Dub and Reggae grooves. Thus, he resists orthodoxy. His percussion tools range from congas, cow bells and shakers to many instruments most commonly found in Africa (kalimba, tamborim, djembe, shakere, qaraqeb, and more). Guests appear in various tracks with backing vocals, guitar, kora, drums, bass, sintir, flute, pandero, oud, bansuri, zawose ilimba, tampura and electronix. Two cuts (Carnivao; Yemonja-Olokun) are interesting as they are solo MJ with multi-tracked arrangements. I particularly liked the four tracks that incorporated the alluring feminine vocal qualities of accompanying vocalist Alejandra Ortiz. The closing track of “Om Maha” is also noteworthy for its shared spotlight with Yaramoonya’s didgeridoo and Paul Livingstone’s tampura. MJ’s music exudes an eclectic spirituality that is drawn from its many inspirations. Its organic depth is a result of both authentic roots and contemporary branches. (Joe Ross, Joshua Tree, CA)

Nailed it
author: Lee
My most humble and deepest gratitude to all who journeyed these many years with MJ and helped bear this most amazing project to fruition. For those of you new, don't make the mistake of thinking the project is all about MJ, unless you understand that MJ is truthfullly all about being a locus for the deepest healing power of music on earth. This is music for waking up, for falling asleep, for playing , for dancing, for making love, for healing, for being. If you play it in the kitchen, the bowls & pans will likely chime in. But don't make the mistake of trying to listen to it while participating in non-soul activities. It could be dangerous for you. Or, maybe not. You just might change what you're doing. My first good listen brought me through tears to it is ok to be me and to be connected to the earth, the trees & sky, the people around me. Go out into the world. Go in, into hearts. Much Love, Lee
