Monica Marquis is an independent r&b/jazz singer, keyboardist, and songwriter based in San Jose, CA. She performs her own original music in Bay Area clubs and other venues, and has sold CDs internationally. Her vocal influences include Stevie Wonder, Teena Marie, Chaka Kahn, Crissy Hynde, as well as jazz vocalists like Dianne Reeves and Tanya Maria.
Monica studied classical piano from age 7-21, after which she went on to earn a BA Degree in music at San Jose State University where she studied vocal performance, jazz improv, and improvised music of world cultures. She has also studied Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, and West African percussion.
Monica has performed in clubs, lounges, private and public events from San Francisco to San Jose for over a decade. She recently played in the San Jose Jazz Festival on the new R&B stage, and was a featured band on KGO Radio's Cure-A-Thon benefiting blood cancer research.
Monica is inspired by a diverse range of musical genres, and enjoys modern-day singer/songwriters who fuse these genres in unique and interesting ways. Monica hopes to follow in their footsteps breaking new ground in music. She is so far living up to the dream with her album “This is Me”, an impressive debut made up entirely of Monica’s original compositions, which she co-produced with Adam Rossi (producer of the KFOG-famed band Luce). It features some of the Bay Area’s most talented musicians who have performed regularly with Monica for the past decade (bassist John Pursel, guitarist Dan Nieckarz, drummer Brady Fishler, etc.)
