(When Dave - the owner of The Zen And Now Coffeehouse - asked me if I wanted to play there I took a look around the place and I said "Yes". Later, I remembered that I had a few songs that didn't fit in with the project I'd been working on - the "Westwood Sex Club" double CD - and that I could use those tracks and a few of my older songs to make a live album [ A wonderful dream that I have always had. ]. I asked Dave what he thought and he said he thought it would be a great idea. Then I called Dan - my recording engineer - and we arranged the show's date to fall on a night when he could make the recording. As it turned out, it was a joy to do and a real hoot with a lot of good fun-loving people some of whom listened to what I was doing. There are three new tracks here - "California Man", "I Want It Back", and "Crown Vic". The rest of the material is from past releases.)
Maurice Mattei started writing songs in his early teen years. After the release of his first recordings in 1983 and 1988 he abandoned music to pursue photography. His interest lay primarily in documentary photography and this led him into certain social circles (Bikers, Drug Addicts, Debutantes, Wrestlers, Strippers, Socialites, Celebrities, etc.) that he found to be strangely new and oddly exciting. This vast and glorious parade of life re-ignited his desire to write songs.
In 1995 he released his first CD of original material. He has since released 7 CD's, the latest being a live recording entitled "Maurice Mattei And A Room Full Of Victims". In addition to CD's, Mr. Mattei has released three cassette tapes, two 7-inch singles, one tape-cassette single and one CD single since 1995. To see a complete discography, examples of photographic works, lyrics page, additional mp3's, and miscellaneous writings please go to the Maurice Mattei web site - www.mmattei.com.

Mr. Mattei has performed steadily since his 1995 release. He performs solo and prefers to be an opening act since this allows him to get home at a reasonable hour. The following is a list of a few of the Artists, most of which few people have ever heard of, that Mr. Mattei has performed with:
The Cole Brothers, The Brand, Radiolaria, Victoria Williams, David Wolfenberger, Over The Rhine, Mercy Baby, Ric Hickey and The Loose Wrecks, Roger Mcguinn, Love America and Johnny Graves.

the highest songwriting standards, an ear-opening revelation.
author: Don Mcleese - No Depression Magazine
You can hold the best of Maurice Mattei's Material to the highest songwriting standards. His "Set The World On fire" would not only fit fine on Bob Dylan's Love And Theft album, It would be a highlight. It was an ear-opening revelation when a career spanning package from this unsung songwriter arrived in the mail.

the most under-rated songwriter on the face of the planet.
author: David Wolfenberger w/Victoria William's "Creekdippers"
Maurice Mattei - World On Fire Maurice is the most under-rated songwriter on the face of the planet. You will not be able to get his CD unless you live in
Cincinnati and even then you will have a hard time finding it. This is a "greatest hits" that was in my CD player on the morning of September 11 when I turned on my
CD as a distraction from the horror that I could not stop staring at on the TV. I didn't know what was in the CD player until the first line "Should you set the world on
fire I'd have but one concern. The one thing I'd desire would be to watch it burn." It was a poignant line before but much more so for someone standing next to a little
crappy TV not worth watching in his bedroom transfixed to the TV as thousands of people were burneed alive. I will never be the same and I have not listened to that CD
since because it mocks me and reminds me of that morning... and yet it is one of the most beautiful song I have ever heard.

the real deal - terrific lyrics, vocals, and guitar work
author: Art Broshure
Mr. Mattei has the real deal going - terrific lyrics, vocals, and guitar work - and his tight and powerful guitar style perfectly fit his plaintive wails and sharp melody. This was a hell of a performance. He plays on a surprisingly small instrument, too—no fancy gear here – that old guitar looked like it had seen way too much and probably could chat knowingly with B.B. King’s Lucille.

an uncanny Dylanesque style that defies being a mere copy
author: Citysearch staff
One of Cincinnati's best - an uncanny Dylanesque style that defies being a mere copy, and speaks to a deeper comprehension of the folk singer-songwriter tradition.
