My name is Mary Ann Wynn, a native of Saginaw, Michigan. In 1990, my life's journey continued on to the great city of Detroit, Michigan.
Music has been "my life" since the age of nine. Initially, I began taking piano lessons and later expanded to vocal lessons. Over the course of time, I began to play, direct, and sing in various choirs. It was during high school when I received an award for best vocalist, that I realized I had a voice. Following high school, I attended Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, after receiving a full tuition talent scholarship. I earned my bachelor's degree in Vocal Music Education from WSU in December 1995 and later received my Master's degree in Education Administration, August 2000. Currently, I am a Vocal Music teacher for Thompson Middle School, in Southfield, MI. In addition to teaching I am the Minister of Music for "Scott Memorial UMC Church and musician/director for "BMCR Community Choir."
One of my most memorable experiences was being selected and performing before a live studio audience as one of five "gospel diva" finalists on the nationally syndicated "Bobby Jones Show", which aired on BET March 2000. Soon after this event I began writing my own music. It was a natural process that led me to the realization that "my purpose" is to provide music that will free your soul.
The completion of my Debut CD Project "Take One Look" was a long time coming but at the same time, everything moved so quickly. The 1st release from the new CD is "Take It Away". "Take It Away" talks about letting the old man die away and allowing the new man to live and have authority over your life. It's about being more like Jesus, which is my goal as a child of God. "Lord I want to be used by thee, but first you must do a work in me. All that's within me that's not like thee, Lord, TAKE IT AWAY."
I've been fortunate to travel and participate in many Gospel Celebrations such as, "The Bobby Jones Gospel Retreat" in Las Vegas, the "GospelSuperfest" in Atlanta, Georgia. I was also fortunate to open for "The Family Affair Gospel Tour" featuring Lee Williams and the Spiritual QC's, Evelyn Turrentine-Agee and Damon Little/Nu Beginning in Louisiana, also ministering in song during the GMWA National Convention in Tampa, Florida. One ultimate experience that I'll always remember was when I had the opportunity to sing in the kick-off Celebration of the Stellar Awards 2004, in Houston, Texas. This past year has been wonderful and exciting and I continue to look forward to what the future holds.
Along with these opportunities, many doors have opened at various radio stations.
The Lord has really blessed in Virginia Beach on Star 94.1 fm. Special thanks to the Star 94.1 family and citizens of Virginia for your ongoing support.
"Take it Away" has received regular airplay on 100.7 FM in Columbus, Georgia as well. Thanks be to God for your love and support.
For those in the Saginaw, MI area, listen and call Vicki Hill on 107.1 FM Sunday mornings to request "Take It Away". I have also been fortunate to receive airplay in Tupelo, Mississippi on WSEL with Ollie Collins. Thank you so much to all of you for letting an independent artist be heard.
For the Detroit Metro listener, 92.3 fm and 107.5 fm has the project as well. Anna Johnson, Program Director, for 1420 am in Flint, MI has also placed it into rotation. Give them a call!
The Lord has blessed me to be heard in many other cities as well. I'm just thankful, because I know it's only because HE has opened the door.
I want to send a special thanks to the members of "True Devotion" for lending their time, their beautiful voices , and their loving spirit.- George Hill, Crystal Lewis, Valerie Miller, and Sakina Canady.
To my husband Jermaine, and my parents, Earnest and Willie Ann Matthews; my brothers Earnest Matthews (whose singing with me on Track 5), Bobby Matthews, Frederick Matthews, and Shawn Matthews, I LOVE you more than words could ever say!!!!!!!! Thank you to my grandparents, all of my family, friends, colleagues, and my students for your love and support!!!!!!
To my extended family- Harold Wynn and Marilyn Brown, Greg Brown and Marlon Wynn- I LOVE you more everyday!!!!!!
I truly believe that God has been preparing me for great things. When the opportunity for the next step presents itself, I'll be ready. The support of my family friends and loved ones has enabled me to understand that my gift will make room for me. They also taught me to always put God first. No matter what happens, my testimony will always be "To God be the Glory".
