Rise Me Up With You is the debut CD from the band Modern Dissent. Their music is a unique blend of Christian rock with a hint of blues, punk, and county thrown in for good measure.
The band started with a perspective that God gave Bob Delateur, as he read the book, Heaven, by Randy Alcorn. (Bob is the primary song writer and guitar player for the band.) In that book he was blown away that heaven was a place where Jesus would fully disclose himself to his people, but that people would still be people and physical creative material would still be physical and culture would still be culture. The people, physical creation, and culture would be fully redeemed in heaven. No sin would corrupt any of these in heaven and Christ would be central. This got Bob thinking about life and culture here and now. He thought that he had become some what of a practical ascetic over the years, devaluing culture, art, and even creation. He thought, “although I must live a life of faith in the unseen (God and his precious promises), at the same time my faith can and must have a visible, cultural expression”. This perspective freed Bob to explore ways to express his love of Jesus through creativity, art, and other forms of expression. Bob feels that without a doubt he became a better preacher from this perspective and then God gave him a desire to start this band. In early 2007, he thought, “I love music, song writing, guitar playing, people, and Jesus. Why don’t I endeavor to meld them all together in some sort of artistic expression?” There were several other guys he knew in the church, who he soon approached; first Joe Sousa (bass player), then Corey Millican (vocals), then Paul Weber (drums). He thought, “All of these men love Jesus and have used their musical abilities faithfully in the church”. After a period of reflection and prayer the band was formed.
Not one of the members of the band would say that they are amazing musicians. But, they are willing to grow and explore. And most important, they value imitating the character of Christ, so the band is more about Him than it is about vain glory (like most bands). Bob (and the other members) pray that they can keep this perspective. They started song writing and liked what they were producing, so they kept doing it. They also began to play live together. Later, with the encouragement of other musicians, they recorded their first CD – Rise Me Up With You. They believe it captures something good that others will enjoy and at the same time be challenged with the truths concerning Jesus Christ. In the process of recording the CD, Paul’s son, Seth became such a help that they believed he could also contribute creatively to the song writing process and has joined the band. They are excited to see how he will help shape their sound. The five person band performs together regularly, in and around Spokane Washington, at various venues and ministry events.
