He received his Batchelor of Music degree from the University of the Pacific; and Master's of Art, as well as Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of California at Berkeley. He is to date the only person honored by the University of California system with a grand prize in musical composition, awarded by an outside jury by the Intercampus Cultural Exchange.
Dr. Fulkerson has written over fifty works in all genres. He is an expert composer for the voice and has long been a champion of vocal ensemble music, having written for this genre and commissioned and/or premiered new works for it by Ezra Sims, Milton Babbitt, and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, among others.
He is the founder of the critically acclaimed contemporary vocal ensemble Ariel; the Composers Chamber Players; the Berkeley Opera Chorus; the Siegfried 2000 Orchestra, and other organizations.
