Blues Filter Through
author: tom stiles
Sweet, funny, ordinary everyday blues on this record, not a soap opera or a tearjerker but the kind of blues like you and i got late at night. The whole thing rolls right along like life, some fun and strange turns in the writing and arranging, a sense of humor, a lot of honesty in the playing and singing from having paid the dues. The blues in every song, like a group of friends who all grew up playing together and this is their last night to lay it all down. Two of these songs (Goin' Home, Kicks and Spit) actually are tearjerkers, but not because they're dramatic, just because there's so much feeling and character in them. Moe's voice goes from soulful to sly and back again and she owns the music.... Aimee's drumming and singing add the punch and playfulness that drive it along. Bob Rice's guitar is inspired and never out of touch. The guest vocalists have a lot to do with the friendly feeling on this disc, as well as the thoughtful playing all around. Listening again now, i see i could have written this whole review about just the opening song and it would still fit... nice that it only gets better and better as you go on.
