notes

moë
"The surface is all glitter but underneath there's seething unrest."

Usually there clings an air of superficiality to that one music that is often described as "catchy". The songs of the young band Moë 'though are literally catchy. They flow into the ear, where they make themselves comfortable just as acquaintances would do. But still they don't wane because from time to time weird, slanting beats mingle with the lascivious and slow melodies. Two years ago after Moë's first couple of concerts the band retired from the life stage into the studio and tried to polish up their sound, which is yet not clearly but still described as electro-pop/trip hop. As from now they present the CD "Reflection", the resulting product of their secluded work. In the tracks complex constructions of sound linger around the lucid vocal lines of singer Annette Zemp and the lyrics talk about melancholy. Zemp is using the poems by Heinrich Heine, poems that have been translated from German into English, amazing poems that surprisingly fit the music in a way hard to describe. Just as dangerous as the rocks in the poem "Lorelei" lie and wait in the Rhein, lurk Moë's melodies, there to be discovered by vigilant ears.

If the sound doesn't simply die away in the landscapes distance but echoing because of every unevenness, if passion defines the ton and if the ton not only defines but also seeks depth then you are generally talking about music who reaches out for you and touches you. That's what Moë is trying to achieve. With success.
Since the quintet of sound fiddlers made its music creation come to light, those who are initiated know: there is ambient-pop beyond trip-hop. Besides there is a poet by the name of Heinrich Heine and a Musician called Annette Zemp. When the latter dears to come near the work of the former mentioned pure song-poetry arises that more than anything deserves to be called by that name. In the end it's all about the perfect match between an extraordinary singer and evenly outstanding musicians. May you be invited be the night sky.

  • A true musical journey.

What can I say? Wow. The slick mixture of down tempo style electronics and haunting vocals makes this album one of the most eclectic albums I’ve heard this year. Annette’s vocals will place a shiver down your spine, while the ever-changing landscape of musical talents make this album flow like the robust Rhine itself. I recommend this album for anyone who wants to relax and be taken on a journey.

A good friend of mine told me to listen to this new band moë - and now that I have this album, I'd just like to say it's fantastic. Great voice, great sonics, unexpected moments, overall it's like great storytelling with music. I highly recommend this.
