Album Notes

"Watercolors" is the first offering from the dynamic unit of saxophonist Yaakov Meyman and drummer Aleksandra Mogilevich, although it sounds far from a debut record, offering the listener inventive original compositions, top-notch perfomances, stellar improvising, and impeccable recording quality. Both musicians have been frequent contributors to the ever-evolving New York Ciy modern Jazz scene, having performed with some of the best players around and in some of the city's best venues. This record features some of their regular colleagues, all major voices in their own right. Trumpeter Alex Sipyagin has been a mainstay in Dave Holland's big band and sextet, also performing with the likes of the Mingus Big Band, the late Michael Brecker, Dave Binney, and having a string of successful solo albums on the Criss Cross label. Bassist Boris Kozlov over the past ten years has become part of the New York City bass elite, holding down the bass chair and being the musical director of the Mingus Big Band and performing with everyone from Toshiko Akyoshi, Michael and Randy Brecker, Benny Golson, James Moody to Eddie Palmieri and Arturo O'Farrill. Pianist Vadim Neselovsky, fresh from his studies at the Thelonious Monk Institute has already spent several years as part of Gary Burton's New Generations band, while pianist Miki Hayama has backed such names as Kenny Garrett, Ralph Peterson, Valery Ponomarev and is currently part of vocalis Nnena Freelon's group.
The music offered here is a prime example of what great modern Jazz is all about

Watercolrs" is Yaacov&Aleksandra first effort and demonstrates a growing competence in the role of leader, composer and arranger. The work provides a perfect venue for demonstrating the talent of Yaacov &Aleksandra and his sidemen. Cuts on this CD rank among the most entertaining jazz saxophone works I have heard. The Yaacov &Aleksandra Quintet has delivered a most memorable effort with "Watercolors".
