Album Notes

If you know mojoe boes than you know this is just what you would expect, an album with colorful titles, different styles, deep grooves, lots of textures, all that is "mojoe". "I'm just a guy from the Midwest," states mojoe. "I've lived around the country for different amounts of time (California, New York, Nashville, Louisiana) and that has colored my view, but I'm still a guy from Ohio." Simply put,"you shouldn't hide where you're from, it makes you who you are and that makes you unique." Hard winters, hot summers, autumn's colors and the beauty of spring reside in the tracks on "...And the Rain Makes the Sun Shine Brighter". Whether it's a full moon over an open field, a Tennessee countryside, the "West", or Manhattan at midnight, the album's sonic landscapes bring to mind scenes from movies that are still to be made.

During our conversation I learned how "...And the Rain" started. "I was getting married and mentioned to my wife, fiancé at the time, that an album would be cool to hand out as a gift at the wedding, she agreed. I didn't want to just burn a bunch of love songs on a CD, I wanted something different and unique that stood on it's own." Proudly stating, "All the songs were written and recorded while my wife and I were engaged," an artist and his muse, another cinematic vision. "There is one exception," says mojoe. "And Also With You" was written and recorded while living in Nashville. It was for my dad, Joseph Francis Boes, who passed away in 2002."

"The album is me", explains mojoe. "It's how I grew up, where I'm from, where I've been, who I am now. I couldn't have made this album 10 years ago." With titles like "Get Right", "And Also With You" and "...And the Rain Makes the Sun Shine Brighter", you feel a sense of mojoe's purpose, spirituality and personal philosophy.

Perfect lazy Sunday music

Contemplative, spiritual, timeless. Boes blends blues, jazz and gently chugging funk for an album to soothe your soul. There are are (probably unintended) echoes of Albatross-era Fleetwood Mac, Aretha's Natural Woman, Van Morrison in Celtic quest mode, and more. But mainly it's a talented and promising new artist trying out his voice.

Stop trying to figure out how to categorize it and just enjoy. Joe Boes blends jazz, blues, soul and a hint of funk, for form a musical mixture that goes down easy. The guitar work throughout the self-produced album is great. Boes is remarkably soulful for a white boy from Ohio.
