ABOUT BARRY PRESTON & MONGREL MIX

Barry Preston, already known as a powerful, eclectic, musician and songwriter, is the force behind Mongrel Mix,
a new rock and R&B based band that is getting a lot of attention. Their first album, Predatory Heat, is a steamy blend of savvy and soul, emotion and wit. The name Mongrel Mix reflects the scope of Preston\'s musical influences as well as the diverse backgrounds of the band\'s members.

Originally from New Jersey, Barry Preston moved to Philadelphia where he honed his musical skills and founded several bands, making appearances from Boston to Florida. Preston plays electric and acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, and all keyboard instruments. A seasoned musician and prolific writer, Preston creates compelling songs that range in feel from savage to tender, and incorporate elements of blues, jazz, funk, R&B, and rock n\'roll. He is also the lead vocalist in Mongrel Mix.

Ted Pileggi is the electric bass player. On Predatory Heat he also contributes rhythm guitar performances on electric, acoustic, and twelve string guitar. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pileggi has been a member of numerous area bands. He also hosted a heavy metal program on a Delaware radio station for five years. Besides heavy metal, Pileggi has been influenced by hard rock of the Van Halen variety, blues, funk, and jazz.

Gregory \"Ju Ju\" Jones is the drummer, percussionist, and background vocalist for Mongrel Mix. He claims to have been \"drumming on something\" since he was three years old. Though he has played in bands of various styles all his life, Jones is best known in his native Philadelphia for his work in jazz. He has played with such notables as Byard Lancaster, Donald Bird, Charles Frambough, Norman brown, and Khan Jamal. Jones attended the Granoff School of Music in Philadelphia which has John Coltrane and the Heath Brothers among its former students.

Predatory Heat was recorded, mixed, and produced at Fulcrum Audio, a recording studio owned and operated by Preston just outside of Philadelphia.

Enough about the band. You need to listen to this!

Diverse, beautiful, and worth a listen

-------------------------- Predatory Heat, the new album by Mongrel Mix, shows off the bands' vast knowledge of musicology. The groups' mood driven tracks touch on diverse styles but maintain creative originality in songs that are mature yet fresh works. These folks know their instruments. Attention paid to many sources of inspiration is ultimately transcended by the bands' own imaginative styling and tight technical innovation. Mongrel Mix can caress as well as kick. The collection in Predatory Heat speaks of what's happening now, but with the knowledge borne of old souls. Composer Barry Preston pairs his music with lyrics written with a poet's hand and a realist's voice. Thoughts, deeds and almost done deals are conveyed with the emotion that is the heart of Mongrel Mix-but the smart snappy lyrics have an edgy feel. For example: "It's like she's always mumblin' a kinda incantation Low under her breath some kind of personal meditation White willow bark to ease your pain Wash a car if you want rain Stay with me and I'll drive us both sane. (from Predatory Heat, "Between Me and You." Mongrel Mix) Title track "Predatory Heat" is a cautionary tale you can dance to, while bluesy "Nothing to Say" is a poignant, quiet tune. The ethereal chant of "In the Erotic" and its smooth urban lyrics plays counterpoint to the raw energy of "Black Mambo Thing". "John Le Conqueroo" gives a streetlight's glow to the cityscape. The mind's eye can't resist the imagery of "Wind on the Rise" as its story unfolds. "Between Me and You" is a good example of artful orchestration and production throughout Predatory Heat-its technical complexity is as seamless as the lyrics quoted here, and just as compelling. Barry Preston, writer and arranger behind Mongrel Mix, plays numerous instruments and his guitar work on Predatory Heat leads the band as surely as his vocals match his evocative lyrics. Strong bass lines by Ted Pileggi are paralleled by eclectic percussion expertise by Gregory "Ju Ju" Jones. The groups' name, Mongrel Mix, serves as acknowledgement of the many different musical forms and styles that they delve into. But this mongrel is as sleek as a purebred, and Predatory Heat is a promise that this is only the beginning of a long pedigree. L.A.Sapienza LASplumas@aol.com
