Montauk Ghost is the new project of former Ashley Stove sideman Matt Brown. “Born out of the pure pop of his former Merge Records band, Ashley Stove, Matt Brown brings us his newest project. Mixing elements of Paul Westerberg, Ryan Adams, and Mac Macaughn, Montauk Ghost shows off Brown’s storyteller heart with every song.” – MusicFest NorthWest Guide 2006.

The self titled first release “Montauk Ghost” will be available on October 10, 2006. Initial sales will be exclusive to http://www.montaukghost.com/. Expansion to distributors, direct sales and electronic download will begin the following week. The record will be released and promoted by Matt Brown’s own Bladen County Records. Future releases by other local Portland acts will follow. “I’m from the small town of Elizabethtown, NC, which is the county seat of Bladen County. Although I feel I’m a part of Portland now, I’ll always be a southerner. Felt good to have the name reflect home.”

Brown played in the boomtown North Carolina indie circuit (ashley stove, the comas) over a 10 year period in Raleigh, NC before relocating to Portland, OR in 2001. Over the next couple years he found the players that would comprise Montauk Ghost. Alex Matson(keys) came to Portland after 5 long years of touring in Denver, CO’s The Samples. Kurt Hagardorn relocated from Durham, NC in 2005, most recently the guitar player for Thad Cockrell and Caitlin Cary. Joe Bowden from Anchorage, AK plays drums and Troy Howard of St Louis, MO is on bass. Transplant town, transplant band.

The second Montauk Ghost release titled “Kennebunkport” will be available early 2007 with a third release “All Mine” to follow later the same year.

Shows up and down the West Coast will support the initial release. A full US tour is planned for the follow up “Kennebunkport” in 2007.
