FROM THE TWISTED MINDS OF THE MOON-RAYS
"THE COOLEST GHOULS AROUND"
Comes an album of haunting melodies and hipster rhythms with a crazy bongo beat! Borrowing from the classic spooky surf records of the 1960's, it takes you way beyond. From windswept Boothill graveyards to a bongo party on Mars, then all the way back to "Thrillville" baby. This is one for a stormy night, but don't listen alone!
Review-Javas Bachelor Pad-
It's all you would expect from these creature-feature, surf guitar, exotica fanatics...and then some. This time around, the boys are all about creating their own dark-hipster musical magic. Of the eleven songs on the disc, nine are Moon-Rays originals. The only two covers on the album, both from old television shows. (That's where the boys get a lot of their inspiration.) The first track on the album is a spooky rendition of the theme from the 60's show "One Step Beyond" titled "Fear." Then there is the theme the vampire soap opera "Dark Shadows" with a tropic twist. It sounds like our old pal Barnabas was sucking the blood of Martin Denny. It's a Quiet Village...of the dead!
The Moon-Rays, who last album showed they had a soft-spot for the Munsters, go after it again with "Dragula Go-Go!" An homage to Grandpa Munster. It's bongo-liscious!
"Blues for Vampira" is a nod to everyone's favorite 1950's horror movie hostess and star of "Plan 9 From Outer Space." And speaking of outer space, "Little Green Men" launches you into you into hipest therimin-induced flight you'll ever take. There's also a nod to Spaghetti Westerns (with a fusion jazz vibe) with "The Hanging Tree."
But without a doubt, the highlights of The Ghouls Go West is the noir-styled "Thrillville," the official theme to cool cat Will "the Thrill" Viharo's B-movie experience.
If you've ever listened to the Bachelor Pad Radio Show, you know the Moon-Rays are one of our favorite bands...for good reason. And after you listen to The Ghouls Go West, don't be surprised if they become your favorite band too.

  • The Ghouls Go West....Can I Go Too?

This instrumental (except track 6)cd is an absolute must for any fan of instro/surf music. It's got tastes of surf, jazz, blues, spy, exotic and it's all fabulous. I had passed on buying this cd for a while, and now I could kick my butt! I love it! It doesn't matter if it's a cover verson or an original song (which most are) they are all incredible. I rated this cd as a five, only because there is no six. Buy it or the ghouls will get'cha.

  • I LOVE THIS MUSIC !!!!
    author: Brad

This is the music of my dreams/nightmares? If the man from UNCLE and the creature from the black lagoon threw a party at horror beach, this would be the soundtrack. Spies, dark shadows and 60's surf all rolled up into a glorious ball of fun. Hey guys, I still have my vinyl copy of The Ventures in Space. I'll bet you do too. If you ever come to the Detroit area I'll be in the front row.

Cool party album. It's pleasant in the background or fun in your face & loud.

  • Why you should listen to this CD
    author: Mark

If you like surf, spy, sci-fi, spaghetti western, lounge, jazz, with a horror theme, and occasional 60's bigbeat/soul-ish instrumental (Dragula go-go!) then you won't want to pass up this album because it combines all of these elements into one overall sound. Little green men captures the feeling of a martian attack, while El Toro Gano has a definite spanish guitar and surf influence, there are many moods to be found here. Although it may be spooky and dark, it is always upbeat, and never drags you 6 feet down!

  • Music to make love to a vampire to.
    author: Mitchell Rentzler

If you are on a date with a vapire and want to score some points put this one on. Some of it is eerie and have you looking in the back seat of your car to make sure something is not lurking in your back seat as you drive down a quiet section of I-95. Some of it is cool and smooth like you heard in that hip zombie club you found once on a rainy night but can't get back to (at least in this lifetime). Great for the mood---if you are want to be out of this world and into.

  • Horror surf rock that gives you all the right chills!
    author: Brian

The Ghouls Go West is an impressive fusion of classic surf rock sounds with creepy vibes, taking both to places you'd never expect to go, but you enjoy when you get there. Some songs are inspired by horror you may (or may not) remember, while most are new tunes, but even the "remakes" have fresh spins to them. You'll get chills from the homage to "One Step Beyond" and the otherworldliness of the show, and then get chills again, as you listen and realize what great music it is. And the rest of the album is just as strong. I never really knew about music like this, and I think I've struck on the best of it right off the bat (no pun intended).
