notes

Hey Folks,

It has been four years since the release of The Delmark Sessions! …Time crawls, don't it?

As the flickerin' neon sign at Vincent's in Wormtown, MA reads- "this is it".

11 bourbon-soaked tunes. Callin' it MADE IN USA.

It is a continued work of Scott Pittman and myself and welcomes Andrew Bergmann on upright bass. Some songs will be famil'ar others may catch you by surprise. They all have their own little quirks and I am real proud of 'em.

Scott Matthew Pittman may be at his personal best on this record. When a song starts to haunt me- I wait. It is almost as if I want it to go away. If it's tough- it stays. I rarely write it down. When I bring it into the real world- Scott's there. -I'll say stuff, like "Scott, give me the sound of a train", "What do you think the devil's wagon sounds like?", "Make it rain." That's it. The rest is Scott. I never tell Scott Pittman what to do. I may tell him what not to do, but Pittman will nail it nine times out of ten. Sometimes it pisses me off. The last song on the record is a complete collaboration with Scott- I wrote it for him- I wanted to have a moment in the show where I make him do something impossible. I wanted it to be two minutes long…he kept pounding (for seven) and created “No Evil”. I put it last because it didn’t play well with the rest of the children. It might be one of the best songs I’ve recorded. Mr. Pittman also arranged my trash-barrel horn melodies. He works as an interpreter for musicians who dare attempt to "sound like 13 angry elephants with tin cans stuck to the bottom of their feet". Scott Matthew Pittman has stayed a loyal musical partner for six years now. Old School.

Andrew Bergmann answered an ad when Joe Faria retired on bass. I spoke with him briefly, and then gave Scott his number. Pittman asked him to sing “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” on the phone. No hesitation. Andrew not only sang it- he did a round. Scott called me back and said, “He’ll do.” Andrew nailed the song “MADE IN USA”. He made the small bridge in “This Ol’ Life” choke spit then breathe. Bergmann knows music…very well. He’s been with us for a year and we are still breaking him- funny how the best dog takes a while to listen right.

I’d like to thank Bob Nash, Peter Linnane, Bryan Mac, Pam Murray and Eileen Rose for helping us give these songs a third leg.

This record would not have been completed without the love and support of my love and support. Thank you. I love you.

-Frank Morey

September five, twenty-ought-six

"Singer-songwriter Frank Morey has never been accused of having a sweet, pretty, angelic sort of voice. The Lowell, MA, native is known for a rough, rugged, throaty style of singing, and his voice is perfect for his very earthy, blues-minded folk-rock. Morey's expressive vocals are as gritty as they are soulful.

The New Englander, who plays acoustic guitar and harmonica, brings a variety of influences to the table. He has often been compared to early Tom Waits, and his other influences range from Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen to the late Chicago blues giant Howlin' Wolf. In the northeast part of the United States, Morey has tended to fare well among fans of anti-folk. Morey isn't anti-folk per se - he has a more classic type of sound - but like the anti-folk crowd, he likes his folk-rock with a tough hard edge and a lot of guts.

Morey, whose live performances typically include both covers and original material, has been playing the Massachusetts club scene since the 90's. His first album, Father John's Medicine, was released on the Indigo Hamlet label in 2000 and was followed by the sophomore album, Cold in Hand. In 2002, Morey signed with veteran producer Bob Koester's Chicago-based Delmark label and recorded his third album, the Delmark Sessions." - Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

Morey's fourth CD, MADE IN USA, was released Dec 2006.

Just happened to listen to the title track while driving through a small Utah town that used to be a booming mine town years ago. Unbelievable how Frank and his bandmates captured that feeling....that picture. "North Atlantic Line" is haunting...simply haunting. Buy this CD, you won't be disappointed.

I heard "Standing on the corner" listening to a Blues program on NPR, I knew I had to have the album. I bought two copies, shipped one to my sister in the UK. We both love it. His earlier albums are on my list to get to, for sure.

  • Awesome tracks - this album follows in the footsteps of Morey's prior records

This disc can go from badass to beautiful and back again. The two tunes I had already heard on XM, Standin On A Corner and I Stopped Believing You Today, I was ready for. The rest were great also. Especially This Ol'Life and North Atlantic Line. The latter was sheer artistry. This disc is my current favorite, can't seem to make myself take it out of the player. Packaging was cool too.

Great CD from beginning to end. I first heard Frank on the Blues staion of XM Radio. His voice and style remind me so much of Leonard Cohen. Great music!

This CD just keeps getting better the more you play it. The first time I heard music from this disk was on Bluesville and I had to have it. I was not dissappointed. This album continues to rock the more and more I listen to it. I went ahead and purchased more from Frank. Thanks Frank, Bluesville, and CD Baby.

  • An American Original
    author: Paul Sonderman

The understated simplicity of Frank Morey's "Made IN USA" belies its substance, which is conveyed in the myriad textures and sonic subtleties that churn just below the surface of each tune. From the lyrical candor of "Stopped Believing In You Today," to the 'in your face' graphic characters in "Standing on a Corner," Mr. Morey seduces listeners with superb story telling, crystal-clear imagery and no nonsense prose. Musically, "Made IN USA" employs a wide palette of acoustic shades to engage the listener. Surprises abound. Just when you think you've got a song figured out, it changes gears. Some songs end abruptly, creating what I call "the unending". Having recently heard excerpts of "Made In USA" on XM's "Bluesville," and then sampling other FM works on the web, I've been a Frank Morey fan for just a short time. My first Morey CD, "Father John's Medicine," made me rabid for more. After absorbing "Made In USA,” I intend to purchase his entire catalog. In a market deluge of banal, formulaic, manufactured, paint-by number aural drek, it's particularly refreshing to run across such an authentic, pure artist, especially one who chooses players as carefully as he does his words. The result, "Made IN USA,” like Mr. Morey himself, is and American Original.

  • Another great release from Frank and company
    author: Bart

Frank still hasn't lost his songwriting touch. His tunes about his fellow degenerates doesn't look down on them, but revels in their own way of living their lives. His voice is still quite scratchy, and the Tom Waits (lyrically and vocally) comparisons aren't going to go away. Not sure this lives up to the Delmark Sessions disc (which is one of the better discs to be released in the last decade), but still a damn fine release. Finally, the packaging fits perfectly! Buy this!

  • Excellent

This is my first Frank Morey CD and it's excellent. Love his lyrics and the sound of his voice. A must buy.

  • Rocks Like Hell
author: Ted Drozdowski, The Boston Phoenix

Like John Fogerty and a handful of other inventive and rooted American artists, Frank Morey has created his own vision of our nation with MADE IN USA - an adventurous tour of the back alleys and flea-bitten byways of life that reached back to the farthest corners of the Delta and the mountains for its sonic inspiration, but always rocks like hell.

  • WHAT DID YOU EXPECT??
    author: Seattles in Wooster

Once again we are not disapointed in the creative and original sounds of the Frank Morey Band. There is no best disk of Frank Morey, only the next one we get to wait for or the last one we got to hear. This one has been a while in the waiting and well worth the moments we have had to wait.( there seams to be a Waits kinda feel to this review??) Andrew is a nice addition to the band and sounds like he fits in well, Scott as always hits notes you didnt think about but will never forget as frank is growling out the underbelly of american love, life, and loitering.. When are you guys touring the world??

After a few years of waiting on pins and needles for the follow-up to Frank Morey’s legendary and brilliant ‘Delmark Sessions’, Frank Morey fans, old and new, have been given a gift in the form of the new album ‘Made in USA’. Featuring the usual suspects found in Mr. Morey’s songs; hookers, preachers, drinkers, sinners, lovers and devils, ‘Made In USA’ has just about everything you could ask for, tucked away in the little white CD case. Featuring Scott Pittman on drums and Andrew Bergmann on bass, the trio proves that simplicity is key when making bluesy, dirty, gin-soaked music. Bringing elements of Howlin’ Wolf, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Kerouac, this CD has nary a dull moment. The gritty “Standing On A Corner” is a great example of the fine song writing talents of Frank Morey and has a wonderful vaudevillian feel to it. “No Good” is a brilliantly dark track, heavy on the bottom end; this one needs to be played loud! “North Atlantic Line” is a gorgeous song, featuring a duet with the angelic Eileen Rose. A love that is deeply moving and unforgettable. It is defiantly one of the highlights on the CD. A perfect ending to journey that ‘Made In USA’ will take you on is the addictive “No Evil”. It is another track that seems to be on repeat round these parts. “I said hey, Hallelujah, Haw, Haw, Haw”

  • Can't get enough of this CD...
    author: Michael Burns

From beginning to end I absolutely love this CD. Franks playing and voice have never sounded better. With so many great songs on the Delmark Sessions I wasn't sure if he would be able to top that effort. He did. Cant wait to hear the new songs live. Proud to be an American, proud to own this CD.

  • In the Name of Justice...Buy This CD
    author: Craig Frank

That Frank Morey is not more widely acclaimed is a slap in the face to all that is right and holy. This CD, like all of Frank's others, offers an insider's view of a man struggling with God, his fellow man, and himself. It is all about life - all our lives - and it is told through humor, tragedy, and sometimes a mixture of both. Pure genuis...in the truest sense of the word.

  • Well this CD seemed to be takin forever...

...but it sure was worth the wait. I'm a long time Frank fan and have been chompin at the bit for something new outta him. MADE IN USA did not disappoint. True to form, Frank creates vivid characters (I can see the old guy in MADE IN USA clear as a bell). Frank knows how to tell a story. And now I see he can rock too. No Good and No Evil make me want to turn it up. Other songs made me want to cry. Others laugh. But they all made me hit repeat. Really, there aint a bad one in the bunch. Thanks fellas!

  • Nary a dull moment.
    author: Bernis

Morey's new album 'Made In U.S.A.' is a song-writing masterpiece that covers all aspects of the human soul. Love, sex, drugs, booze, religion, depression, you name it, it's in there. Must Be Hard, Standing on a Corner, This Ol' Life, I Stopped Believing in You Today, and North Atlantic Line, are in my opinion five of Frank's best songs to date. That might say a lot coming from me since I, as Bob Slydell might say, celebrate the guy's entire catalog. Anybody who has enjoyed any of Frank's past work will surely enjoy this one as well. It features Frank's classic gritty guitar work and vocals as well as a couple of surprises that won't disappoint such as the albums closing track, No Evil (A live favorite featuring S.M. Pittman going nuts on the trap Gene Krupa style). Made In U.S.A. is a must have.

  • A booze soaked blues extravaganza of the highest order!!!
author: Shawn William Leuchter the First

MADE IN USA is a booze soaked blues extravaganza of the highest order. A fine follow up to the legendary DELMARK SESSIONS. The songwriting and musicianship are flawless. Franks voice is in fine form (A ringing endorsement for the tobacco industry) on standouts "This Ol'Life", "Staning On A Corner" and "I Stopped Believing In You Today". The rhythm section of Scott Pittman (percussion)and Andrew Bergman(bass) bring the thunder on the slide guitar infused "Freight Train" and the explosive "No Evil". A live favorite that brings the album to it's glorious metallic climax. Their groove on the albums opener "Must Be Hard" is just plain dirty. Although, "North Atlantic Line" an acoustic ballad featuring a duet with local favorite Eileen Rose is arguably the albums hightlight. 5 stars, two thumbs up and a twelve pack down. Buy the album and for crying out loud "tip the goddamn bartender!!!"
