The hard-bop styled quintet of drummer Morgan Childs made its debut on the Cellar stage in January of 2007, in a tribute to drum great Max Roach that won\'t soon be forgotten by those lucky enough to be in attendance of the sold-out performance. Just over a year since that date, The Morgan Childs Quintet will be recording its debut album for Cellar Live next weekend on January 25th and 26th. The group has become something of a Cellar favorite over the last year, with their thorough explorations of obscure bop repetoire that recall the great quintets of the 50\'s and 60\'s. With the frontline of Chris Davis (a transplanted Florida native) on trumpet and Evan Arntzen on saxophone, Amanda Tosoff at the piano and the rhythm pairing of Sean Cronin on bass and Childs on drums, its sure to be a fun and swinging affair. The two nights of recording will feature composers Richie Powell, Kenny Dorham, Lee Morgan, and Clark Terry, as well as brand new material by Childs and Tosoff.

Born in Vancouver, drummer Childs was raised in a musical family in Invermere, BC, before relocating to Vancouver in order to attend Capilano College, where he studied with mentors Blaine \"Wacker\" Wikjord, Dave Robbins, and pianists Ross Taggart and Chris Sigerson. A graduate of that program, Childs has also attended the Banff Centre International Jazz Workshop, where he studied with NYC drummers Clarence Penn, Ari Hoenig and Jim Black, and performed with Mark Turner, Mike Murley, Django Bates, Kenny Werner and others. In the past few years, Childs has become an in demand drummer on the Canadian jazz scene, performing with his own groups, and the trio/quartet of pianist Amanda Tosoff, as well as lending his talents to a host of national and international artists including Phil Dwyer, Hugh Fraser, Ian Hendrickson-Smith, Mike Allen, Bruno Hubert, Bill Coon, Rob Scheps, Laila Biali, Chris Gale, and many others. Childs is a recipient of the Fraser MacPherson Music Scholarship Fund, and the Galaxie Rising Star Award (with Amanda Tosoff\'s quartet, 2007).
