Singer-songwriter, Morgan Finlay is a Canadian-born, but globally minded musician, with an impressive history of touching the minds and souls of many fans from many places. With a voice that has been compared to those of Bruce Cockburn and Jeff Buckley, Finlay’s sound is complex, passionate and reinforced by poetically strong lyrics.
Written between 2007 and 2011, the collection of songs on 'Latitude' takes higher ground not only on the depth of its storytelling-- mined in five different countries-- and Finlay's bonafide arrival as a singer-songwriter, but also on the strength of the performances, from guitarist Dean Drouillard (Sarah Harmer, Royal Wood), cellist Mike Olsen (Arcade Fire, Hidden Cameras), bassist Marlow Holder (Kinnie Starr, Zubot & Dawson), drummer Brendan Hamley (David Celia, Anton Barbeau), accordionist Katheryn Petersen and guitarist Jake Roeder.
Underpinning the strength of the songs of 'Latitude' is an approach to the release, and indeed his career, that embraces and includes his fans like never before. First the fans chose their favourite 12 songs from amongst 17 demos, and formed the final tracklist; then, seven fans volunteered to shoot videos for the songs of the new album; and finally, over 100 supporters made the release and subsequent touring of 'Latitude' a reality through IndieGoGo.com, a crowdfunding platform.
At the heart of Finlay’s approach was a change in philosophy when it came to creating and releasing an album. “I shifted my focus from the crowd that had never heard of me, to the one that had; to those who had stood behind me – and who already cared about me and my music. I’ve embraced my fans in every twist and turn of this process. Where this album goes is up to them to decide.”
An advocate for the environment, Finlay's 'Latitude' will be released directly to digital download on CDBaby and iTunes, and fans will be able to purchase the full 50-page booklet separately, through MorganFinlay.com.
