I'm like that dog who's getting scratched in just the right spot, and can't get enough. Jealous Sea is shockingly satisfying.

Within the rubric of Roots/Folk music there is a narrow line one must walk. On one side is authenticity and adherence to tradition, on the other, is the desire to innovate and find one’s own voice. Stray too far from this path and you risk either redundancy or unfamiliarity. No one, and I mean no one walks the line better than Cahalen and Eli. Instrumentally, vocally, and lyrically they use genre-appropriate vernacular while always eschewing the obvious. In point of fact, more than anyone else that I can think of, theirs is a music that serves as a kind of lingua franca; a common language born of a love for music, regardless of it’s origin. They let it all creep in without polluting the core. This is part of the future, so soak it in!

Great debut
author: M Snyder
This first collaboration between Eli and Cahalen is outstanding in every way: great original material, interesting and varied arrangements and instrumentation, strong vocals and fine harmony blend, the groove and especially the overall instrumental prowess. The recording and production work is just right and complements the material, with some fine contributions from Matt Flinner and Colorado cohorts. Lyrics are surprisingly mature for writers this young, and the themes and images brought forth I find to be honest and earthy. Althought the sound is mostly spare and traditional, it is overlaid with tasty backup licks and solos throughout that even authentic old timers would likely find satisfying, original and not overly showy or excessively modern. I highly recommend this recording for fans of old-time, bluegrass, gospel, stompgrass/newgrass and folks who love old-school duet singing. I'll look forward to more great things from these boys and hope to see them on stage soon.
