„First time, I’m enjoying a record session!“ admits Art Blakey on the legendary „Night At Birdland“ from 1954. It seems that jazz musiciens haven’t changed their preferences, since the much younger trumpet player Matthias Spillmann also prefers the stage to the recording studio.
But why not record in one of Switzerland’s most reknowed Jazz Clubs: Bird’s Eye in Basel. For that, Spillmann hired three of the best musicians in the scene of European Jazz.
Out of four recorded concerts, Spillmann chose seven tracks: Two standards, among them the beautiful and rarely played „Lotus blossom“ by the late Billy Strayhorn. Four originals and one composition by the bands pianist Robert Lakatos complete the set.
Six of the songs were recorded the last night of the series, just one proof for how well the interplay among the musicians developped.
You can also hear the warm and intimate contact with their public. An atmosphere that created one hour of inspired jazz.
